Topic: Embothrium

Alloxylon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Australia, they are known as tree waratahs due to similarities in the inflorescences between them and the closely-related Telopea.
Together with Telopea, Oreocallis and Embothrium, Alloxylon makes up a small group of terminal often red-flowering showy plants scattered around the southern edges of the Pacific Rim.
Known as the Embothriinae, this is an ancient group with roots in the mid Cretaceous, when Australia, Antarctica and South America were linked by land.

Botany Photo of the Day: Embothrium coccineum
Despite there being roughly eight thousand different taxa of plants at UBC Botanical Garden, only a precious few are remarked upon year after year in the lunchroom.
This is also one of those plants that gets me excited about the future at UBC every time I think of it (Embothrium creates a vivid enough memory that one doesn't have to see it to recall the experience).
Any gardener will agree that a garden is never finished, but when I say never completed, I mean that the original design of the gardens (at their modern site) from the early 1970s ran out of funding and areas were left either fallow or planted without an overall landscape scheme in mind.

 Fota Gardens History
The development of the arboretum coincided with the great plant hunting expeditions that went out around the world bringing back wonderful specimens from places such as the Orient, South America and the Pacific coast of north west America.
Noteworthy among were the expeditions of David Douglas to California and Oregon in the 1830s, William Lobb who introduced the magnificent Chilean Flame trees (Embothrium) to Europe in 1846 and Robert Fortune of the Horticultural Society who collected widely in China and Japan in the 1850s and 1860s.
It is possible in Fota, unlike in many other gardens and arboreta, to appreciate each individual plant and tree and, often, to view it in its entirety.
