In July, 1981, Embraer joined the AMX Program, which purpose was to establish a partnership to develop a subsonic fighter.
By the end of the 1980s, government investments on the aerospace industry were largely reduced, due to the Constitution of 1988, which extinguished many forms of support to the industry, and due to the lack of interest in the defense area caused by the end of the Cold War.
On July, 1999, Embraer announced the development of a new family of aircraft: the E-Jets Series, comprising of the Embraer 170, 175, 190 and 195 aircraft.

 Comair Flight 3272 - The Enquirer - May 14, 1997
Comair is moving to install ice detectors on all 39 of its Embraer EMB-120 commuter planes even before the devices are required by the Federal Aviation Administration, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Icing is suspected as a factor in the crash of a Comair Embraer EMB-120 Jan. 9 that killed all 29 on board.
Manuel Monteiro, assistant vice president for engineering liaison and safety at Embraer's U.S. office in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said the sensors proposed by the FAA consist of a 2-inch metal probe on the nose of the aircraft.

The Embraer EMB-120 was flying through icy conditions when it nose-dived into a snowy field.
Last week, the National Transportation Safety Board released a 2-inch-thick packet of documents indicating a series of missteps, ranging from poor communications with the control tower to underestimating the amount of ice on the wings, may have contributed to the crash.

The NTSB also stated that contributing to the accident was the deficient design of the propeller control unit which did not correctly evaluate the failure mode that occurred during this flight, which resulted in an uncommanded and uncorrectable movement of the blades of the airplane's left propeller below the flight idle position.
The crew was unable to maintain altitude and diverted to a nearby airport.
According to various news reports, the aircraft spiraled into the ground and was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire.

SUMMARY: This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to all EMBRAER Model EMB-120 series airplanes, that requires revising the Airplane Flight Manual to ensure that the propeller synchronizer switch is "OFF" after engine start and before takeoff and landing.
This action is necessary to prevent a possible loss of airplane control and subsequent injury to the flight crew and passengers.
Note 1: When a statement identical to that in paragraph (a)(1) of this AD has been included in the general revisions of the AFM, the general revisions may be inserted into the AFM, and the copy of this AD may be removed from the AFM.

Those actions were intended to prevent the potentiometers that provide information on the positions of the primary flight controls to the FDR from transmitting noisy signals or becoming improperly calibrated, resulting in the transmission of incomplete or inaccurate data to the FDR.

 Pilots: Comair crash avoidable
"The Air Line Pilots Association feels that the FAA was in possession of information to several icing upsets (incidents of loss of control) of the Embraer 120 prior to the Comair accident and failed to exercise their oversight authority and take action which would have prevented the loss of Comair 3272," Capt. Serber said.
Embraer, he said, came up with new recommendations for operation of the EMB-120.
The problem, he said, is the absence of any FAA system that requires manufacturer bulletins on a plane's performance to be relayed to pilots.

We have determined that the actions identified in this AD are necessary to reduce the potential of ignition sources inside fuel tanks, which, in combination with flammable fuel vapors, could result in fuel tank explosions and consequent loss of the airplane.
Chafed electrical harnesses could result in a potential source of ignition for fuel vapors near a fuel tank and consequent fire or fuel tank explosion.
The service bulletin describes procedures for modifying electrical harnesses located at the left- and right-hand wing roots; and re-routing and modifying the harness of the right-hand outboard flap actuator.
