BBC - Weather Centre - World Weather - Country Guides - France
France is a large country, two and a half times as big as Great Britain, extending for some 1,000 km/600 mi from north to south and from east to west.
Although much of northern and western France is low-lying and rather flat, there are some high mountain regions in the south and east: part of the western Alps, the Pyrenees, which form the border with Spain, and the Massif Central, which rises to over 1,800 m/6,000 ft in its southern and central parts.
The principal mountain regions of France are the Vosges in Alsace and Lorraine, the Jura and Alps along the borders with Switzerland and Italy, the Pyrenees in the extreme south, and the higher parts of the Massif Central.

History & Language of Provence (Chapter 1)
These were actually a series of upright stones supporting a capstone, forming a chamber in which to lay the dead, and then covered with earth.
Due to the terrain of southern Provence, too rough and too warm to support the great mammals, the staple meats of early inhabitants were ibex, red deer and rabbits; this explains the notable absence of cave paintings depicting the hunt, which were immortalized by cave-artists in western France.
ockets of the language survived nonetheless, and in the late 17th and early 18th century, interest in the dialect was revived as southern France took an interest in its cultural heritage.

In France the right did not belong exclusively to the king: it was also exercised by the Dukes of Normandy, Bretagne, and Burgundy, and by the Counts of Champagne and Anjou.
Towards the end of the sixteenth century the restriction of the Council of Lyons began to be disregarded, and on 24 April, 1608, the Parliament decided that the king had the droit de régale over all the dioceses of France; but Henry IV did not carry this parliamentary decision into effect.
