Emergent gameplay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emergent gameplay is the creative use of a game in ways unexpected by the game designer's original intent.
Emergent play can either be totally outside the game (machinima) or have a direct impact on the gameplay (see "game currency trading" below).
Emergent play usually involves leveraging one or more of these components.

Emergence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One reason why emergent behaviour is hard to predict is that the number of interactions between components of a system increases combinatorially with the number of components, thus potentially allowing for many new and subtle types of behaviour to emerge.
The hallmarks of an emergent concept, as opposed to other memes (urban myths, or viruses of the mind) are that EC are increasingly accepted as truth or possibility, based upon other empirical or anecdotal evidence in the mind of the believer or society (in its subsets) as a whole.
Emergent structures are a favorite strategy found in many animal groups: colonies of ants, piles of termites, swarms of bees, flocks of birds, herds of mammals, shoals/schools of fish, and packs of wolves.

 Emergent Properties
The existence of emergent qualities thus described is something to be noted, as some would say, under the compulsion of brute empirical fact, or, as I should prefer to say in less harsh terms, to be accepted with the “natural piety” of the investigator.
Predictive: Emergent properties are systemic features of complex systems which could not be predicted (practically speaking; or for any finite knower; or for even an ideal knower) from the standpoint of a pre-emergent stage, despite a thorough knowledge of the features of, and laws governing, their parts.
Do emergent features necessarily appear in all systems attaining a requisite level of complexity, or is this at best a contingent fact?) Nor does he indicate a position on the nature of causation itself, an issue that is crucial to understanding what the nonsupervenience of causal powers amounts to.

Thus, emergent phenomena can demonstrate why a reductionistic physical theory, viewing all matter in terms of its component parts, which in turn obey a relatively small number of laws, can hope to model complex objects such as living beings.
However, by the same token, emergent phenomena serve to caution against greedy reductionism, because the microscopic explanation of an emergent phenomenon may be too complicated or "low-level" to be of any practical use.

Emergent literacy is the developmental process that begins at birth whereby children acquire the foundation for reading and writing or literacy.

Minimizing Repetitive Play in Action Games
Therefore Emergent game play is basically when you have a global set of rules, but these rules can interact with each other in a wide variety of different ways.
Emergent play can be continually rewarding for the player and help minimize repetition because you’re able to do so many different things.
In playing the flinch game, you try to get your friend to flinch, by pretending to hit him, and in order to see what his reaction is. The reaction to your friend trying to hit you is classical conditioning.

Emergent games, however, arguably are not - they may create narratives through their play, just as we might create a narrative about our walk to the park, our conversation with the homeless man we met there, or how we tripped and fell into a puddle on the way home.
These two overall types, emergent and progressive, are loosely defined by both the end state for the completed game, and the process by which a player or players achieve that end state.
While emergent games provide a series of game states (a shuffled deck of cards, an arrangement on the board, a set of characters or pieces) and a set of rules, the play emerges from any myriad potential combinations.

I refer to intentional emergent gameplay, which seems to be the object of the presentation you linked, as "open-ended design." I would love to be corrected if there is a better term for what I am trying to describe.

Underlying many kinds of emergent behavior in biology are the critical changes in connectivity that occur, as links increase between the elements of a system.
It is sufficient for connectivity in the landscape to be reduced to a level where communication between population elements is low enough to produce environmental "patches" for which the level of communication between patches is substantially lower than communication within each patch.
Besides playing a role in evolution, the fragmentation of a landscape into isolated environmental patches has severe implications for biodiversity.

One of the really great things that granting authority to the rules-text does for play is that, in a sense, it gives authority to a person who is not a member of your play group.
One of the big things that freeform play does for you is that, since you are not ceding authority to an inflexible game text, you are able to evaluate where authority should be distributed in real time.
