Emerson, Lake and Palmer were one of rock and roll's earliest "supergroups" who were formed from members of three already successful bands, The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer were forced to head to Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas to record what would become an album called "Love Beach", a disjointed, uninspired collection of songs released in mid 1979, It also marked the end of ELP for 12 years.
Emerson cut more tracks for a solo album; Lake recorded several songs with Asia's Geoff Downes for a band project that was eventually shelved and Palmer returned to the Asia line up for a series of tours.

Palmer was, to say the least, probably the whitest drummer since the guy who used to play on the old Association records, a man more fit to playing march rhythms on his snare than getting down with the fonky double bass-pedals.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer excel at their respective instruments, and Lake's voice is in pretty good form.
Lake undersings pretty much the entire album, and though I'd like to give some appreciation to his vocal melodies, which are often the most interesting part of the song, I also wish he sung with a bit more brimstone in his bowel, if you know what I mean.

Keith Emerson, let's face it, was almost indisputably the greatest keyboardist on earth, hands down (I think he was officially given the title by some renowned magazine twenty five times in a period of thirty years).
And Lake does just that; not that the lyrics are all bad ("the sadness on your shoulders like a wornout overcoat, in pockets greased and tattered hang the rags of your hopes," there's a good line), but they really need that extra oomph in order to make them work.
As you might imagine, when they performed it in concert, they would stick tons of music between the bookends of the piece, often sticking several of their other tunes in the middle, but this 'miniature' seven or eight minute middle section is wonderful in and of itself.

This was the last show of the USA Tour and at the time the band was forced to stop playing with the orchestra halfway through the tour due to serious economic difficulties.
After the tour, Emerson Lake and Palmer recorded the studio album "Love Beach" and finally split a year later.
After the Providence concert, Emerson Lake and Palmer wouldn't play live together again for another 14 years, in June 1992.
