		Emerson and Lake first discussed the possibility of collaborating at that point, but only after the Crimson lineup began disintegrating during their first U.S. tour did he finally opt to leave the group (after agreeing to sing on the forthcoming Crimson album).
		Emerson was interested in further exploiting the range of the Moog synthesizer, and had conceived of an extended suite built around an opening eruption of sound, while Palmer had come up with an unusual drum pattern that he was eager to use.
		ELP split up in 1979: Lake embarked on a moderately successful solo career, Emerson took to composing film scores and recorded the occasional solo project, and after a stint with the band P.M., Palmer joined the pop supergroup Asia.

		Emerson, Lake and Palmer were one of rock and roll's earliest "supergroups" who were formed from members of three already successful bands, The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster.
		Emerson, Lake and Palmer were forced to head to Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas to record what would become an album called "Love Beach", a disjointed, uninspired collection of songs released in mid 1979, It also marked the end of ELP for 12 years.
		Palmer was still contracted to Asia and was unable to participate, but gave his blessing to Emerson and Lake to work together again.

		Emerson, Lake and Palmer's debut album was in many ways their most interesting; there seems to be have been very little development after this release, just refinement of the existing elements.
		Those that complain that ELP are too pretentious or over-the-top seem to miss the point; yes, these guys will suffocate you with their machismo, but that's precisely the charm of this type of music (for me, at least).
		ELP was one of the most important bands of the progressiev rock era in terms of influence.

	ELP - Biography
		Although most ELP fans believe their first gig was at the massive three day long Isle Of Wight Pop Music Festival on August 29th., the first gig actually took place six days earlier at a 3000 seat hall in Plymouth Guildhall.
		Emerson Lake and Powell released their debut LP in 1986 and began rehearsing in England for a US tour.
		Emerson cut more tracks for a solo album; Lake cut several songs with Asia's Geoff Downes for a band project that was eventually shelved; and Palmer returned to the Asia line up for a series of tours.

		Emerson is clearly running out of ideas, as he recycles his stereotypical playing for the zillionth time on endless synth/organ/piano solos, and Lake isn't really any better.
		The album mostly showcases Lake: Emerson, who just had had an operation on his right hand, never engages in lengthy piano solos or synth noodlings (which doesn't mean that the album is totally deprived of keyboard work, though; it's just a little more restrained), while Palmer still sticks in the background.
		Lake's voice has somewhat improved since his Black Moon problems (he quit smoking, they say), but it's still weaker, hoarser and darker than before; Palmer still relies too much on electronics; and Emerson is a little bit too hard on hi-tech synths that give the whole performance a somewhat mechanical and artificial feel.

		ELP's rendition, on the other hand...well, it's actually at its best when the band gets away from trying to adapt the classical piece.
		Speaking of Lake's lyrics, things like his climactic lines "There's no end to my life, no beginning to my death, death is Life!" foreshadow some of the horribly bad lyrics he would write on later albums.
		ELP is at their best when they are not aping (raping?) Mussorgsky, but unfortunately this only happens on one track, "Blues Variations".

		In a way, ELP, as they are commonly referenced, is the missing link between progressive groups of yesterday and today.
		From what I've heard, Emerson would turn 360 degrees while playing a grand piano, ride his Hammond organ, throw knives at his equipment, lay flat out on stage with a Hammond on top of him, and even launch fireworks from his portable ribbon controller.
		In a way, ELP is defined by their stage antics and live performances as their studio works.

		Both Keith Emerson (The Nice) and Greg Lake (King Crimson) were former key members of groups that had pretty much created the genre, and as such one could only expect them to continue what they seemed to have a knack for.
		Keith Emerson, let's face it, was almost indisputably the greatest keyboardist on earth, hands down (I think he was officially given the title by some renowned magazine twenty five times in a period of thirty years).
		And Lake does just that; not that the lyrics are all bad ("the sadness on your shoulders like a wornout overcoat, in pockets greased and tattered hang the rags of your hopes," there's a good line), but they really need that extra oomph in order to make them work.
