Emerson, Lake and Palmer (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emerson, Lake and Palmer was the debut album of British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer, released in 1970 (see 1970 in music).
As a first album from the newly-formed supergroup the influences they brought with them are clear in the mix of instrumental and vocal pieces.
Palmer's solo spot, "Tank", is intended to showcase his virtuoso drumming style, although it does feature accompaniment by Emerson on synthesisers.

With capable Keith Emerson at the controls of the Moog synthesizer and the Hammond B3 organ, Greg Lake on guitar and vocals, and talented Carl Palmer on drums, the debut release leaned heavily toward a new technical wizardry that became the band's halmark.
Emerson brilliantly plays a wide variety of keyboards (including the Royal Festival Hall organ for one track), Lake's powerful vocals, booming bass and expert guitar lines simply amaze, and Palmer is a mighty stickman, trouncing his huge drumkit into submission with the greatest of ease.
Emerson's three-part keyboard suite, "The Three Fates," remains one of his greatest contributions to the band, and, of course, there's Lake's timeless, FM radio sing-along classic, "Lucky Man," complimented by Emerson's avant-garde synthesiser flourishes and Palmer's thumping drumwork.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer were dominant in the 1970s, had a stint as Emerson, Lake and Powell in the early 1980s, then reformed in the 1990s as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and did three or so CD’s, and then parted ways towards the end of the 90’s.
Emerson is back on piano, with Palmer accompanying on the drums, again playing brushes, with Lake playing harmonies on his bass guitar.
Lake sings this one in a deeper voice, with a cool, echoing high hat by Palmer, and a nice riff on the bass, followed by Emerson cranking it out on the organ.

New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock EM-EZ
Emerson's sheer mastery of the moog and flamboyant technical ability were incredible; his talent along with the dynamo drumming antics of Carl Palmer, won the band a legion of fans.
Emerson was widely regarded as one of the most talented keyboardists in the history of rock, and Palmer one of the finest drummers.
Lake was a good enough bassist and guitarist to keep up with Emerson and Palmer, but his strength was singing ballads such as "Lucky Man" from their self-titled debut album, "From the Beginning" from Trilogy, and "Still You Turn Me On" from Brain Salad Surgery.

This album, which reached the Top 20 in America and got to number four in England, showcased the group at its least pretentious and most musicianly -- with the exception of a few moments on "Three Fates" and perhaps "Take a Pebble," there isn't much excess, and there is a lot of impressive musicianship here.
Even here, in a relatively balanced collection of material, the album shows the beginnings of a dark, savage, imposingly gothic edge that had scarcely been seen before in so-called "art rock," mostly courtesy of Emerson's larger-than-life organ and synthesizer attacks.
Greg Lake's beautifully sung, deliberately archaic "Lucky Man" had a brush with success on FM radio, and Carl Palmer became the idol of many thousands of would-be drummers based on this one album (especially for "Three Fates" and "Tank"), but Emerson emerged as the overpowering talent here for much of the public.

 ELP - Biography
The album was released in March of 1970, and during the same month, King Crimson appeared on the BBC TV show, "Top Of The Pops", lip synching "Cat Food", with Greg Lake on an acoustic guitar.
Palmer was still contracted to Asia and was unable to participate, but gave his blessing to Emerson and Lake to work together again.
Emerson cut more tracks for a solo album; Lake cut several songs with Asia's Geoff Downes for a band project that was eventually shelved; and Palmer returned to the Asia line up for a series of tours.

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER (ELP) Tarkus reviews and MP3
Lake’s lyrics in 'Tarkus' are a diatribe against the futility of war, and apparently he stated that the lyrics are also about where past revolution has got us: nowhere, in his opinion.
“Tarkus” is the Opus magnus of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
The first side of this album is comprised of the Tarkus suite, a song pertaining to lost soliders of war and a giant armadillo tank (sounds a bit bizarre, eh?), but the album is marred by a mediocre second side of somewhat silly material that really throws the mood of this album off a lot.

With much critical fanfare, and with the success of Nice and Crimson King, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were destined for Classic Rock fame, and sure enough, their self-titled debut climbed to the American Top 20 and the British Top 5, and forever after they were superstars.
Overall, 'Emerson, Lake, and Palmer' is a dominated by the piano, and Emerson seems to be the entire focus of the album, while Palmer and Lake seem to be left in the cold.
Although Emerson is an excellent pianist and synth player, one of the best in fact, I think his playing gets in the way of the other musicians, basically giving them the cold shoulder.

Palmer never ceases to amaze with his fabulous and inventive rhythms, while Lake is the glue that holds it all together.
The grand work on this album, "Tarkus" takes up the first side, going from the track "Eruption" to "Aquatarkus", whatever that is, but you don't care what it's about, you just groove to the stream-of-consciousness rant of Lake's singing and Emerson's mind-boggling keyboard work.
Keith Emerson is a beast on the keys and Carl Palmer shows off his formidable chops in keeping up with Keith, and of course Greg Lake holds it all down.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer : Trilogy - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
After the heavily distorted bass and doomsday church organ of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut album, the exhilarating prog rock of epic proportions on Tarkus, and the violent removal of the sacred aura of classical tunes on Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, ELP's fourth album, features the trio settling down in more crowd-pleasing pastures.
Greg Lake's acoustic ballad "From the Beginning" put the group on the charts for a second time.
He provided a lush, comfy finish to the album that made it particularly suited for living-room listening and the FM airwaves.

Nearly thirty years ago, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer burst onto the music scene with their remarkable self-titled debut album.
Consequently, this tribute album sounds as out of place in today's market as Emerson, Lake and Palmer [ELP] did in 1970.
The idea for a tribute album was originally conceived by Magna Carta recording executives Peter Morticelli and Mike Varney.

"Lucky Man" and "C'est La Vie" offer more relatively low-key Lake balladry, which contrasts nicely with the hard-edge prog-rock experimentalism of such epics as "Knife Edge," the 20-minute suite "Tarkus," and "Trilogy," one of the most underrated gems in the ELP catalog.
Emerson shows his eclecticism with a boogie woogie piano romp on Meade Lux Lewis's "Honky Tonk Train Blues," and things close on a heartwarming note with the group's Yuletide favorite "I Believe in Father Christmas."
