Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ELP sound was heavily dominated by the Hammond organ and Moog synthesizer of the flamboyant Emerson.
Emerson, Lake, and Powell charted reasonably well, with a major single, "Touch and Go" generating some radio and MTV exposure for the trio.
Lake admitted that he did not train his voice: a few live shows were generally enough to get it in shape, he claimed.

ELP is keyboard wizard Keith Emerson, originally from The Nice; bass/guitar/vocalist/songwriting Greg Lake, who came from King Crimson; and drummer Carl Palmer, who later joined Asia.
Probably my favorite ELP cd, or possible my second after "Brain Salad Surger" Without a doubt it is one of the best progressive rock albums to come out of the 1970's.
While ELP have never been on my favorite band list, I can honestly rank "Tarkus" up with the likes of Genesis and Yes, who are some of my favorites.

New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock EM-EZ
Emerson's sheer mastery of the moog and flamboyant technical ability were incredible; his talent along with the dynamo drumming antics of Carl Palmer, won the band a legion of fans.
ELP were a bastion of early '70s progressive rock and many bands are compared to ELP as a point of reference, thus you should become familiar with their style.
Emerson was widely regarded as one of the most talented keyboardists in the history of rock, and Palmer one of the finest drummers.

 Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Emerson is clearly running out of ideas, as he recycles his stereotypical playing for the zillionth time on endless synth/organ/piano solos, and Lake isn't really any better.
The album mostly showcases Lake: Emerson, who just had had an operation on his right hand, never engages in lengthy piano solos or synth noodlings (which doesn't mean that the album is totally deprived of keyboard work, though; it's just a little more restrained), while Palmer still sticks in the background.
Lake's voice has somewhat improved since his Black Moon problems (he quit smoking, they say), but it's still weaker, hoarser and darker than before; Palmer still relies too much on electronics; and Emerson is a little bit too hard on hi-tech synths that give the whole performance a somewhat mechanical and artificial feel.

ELP returned, sort of, keeping their moniker intact with the addition of drummer Cozy Powell in lieu of Carl Palmer.
Emerson, Lake & Powell represents the band’s best music since the earlier Works (and perhaps as far back as Brain).
Many mused that ELP was merely cashing in on the success of Yes and Asia, but for every concession to contemporary music are two steps that return to the old wonders.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer burst onto the scene in 1970 at the Isle of Wight festival.
Taking the album as a whole, Emerson’s keyboard work is at its brilliant best, and he constantly sparks off Powell, who seems to revel in the space afforded him, wnile Lake's rich vocals are crystal clear and well up in the mix, by turns powerful and gentle.
But with Palmer leading his own band, Lake holed up in a studio working on another solo album, and Emerson preparing a second piano concerto, it’s likely that ELP, with or without Palmer, have probably enjoyed their finest, and possibly their final, hour.

They explored their capabilities to an extreme, even with the technology limitations of the early 70's, breaking ground, setting the new parameters for a new vein in the english pop music (at the time) which would be called progressive music.
ELP released 10 outstanding albums during the 70's, and after a long break, they got back in the 90's with a new approach, but still making good music.
Other good ELP albums include "Pictures at an Exhibition", their provocative, fiery and intense take on a classical work.

Of course, prog fans are musical adventurers by their very nature, willing to plumb the most profund pits of darkness, to climb the tallest spires of truth, to dance with the invisible spirits of music in an embrace of faith.
ELP may not be your favorite band (or second or third), but they remain one of the principal gods in the great Pantheon, and to assail their virtues is to shake the foundation of the building itself.

Both are Lake driven tracks, his voice sounding steady and clear, with a power to it which had been lacking on the immediately previous albums.
Lake is credited in the back cover of the album as playing basses and guitars, but I can`t say if in the other songs he played guitar too, as this album is dominated by the keyboards.
Emerson is "in hand" on the keyboards, Lake is "in voice" and Powell is doing a really great job in replacing Palmer, leaving on this LP a mark of his astonishing drumming style (we must not forget that he was coming from a hard rock and heavy metal experience).

 Emerson Lake and Palmer
Both Keith Emerson (The Nice) and Greg Lake (King Crimson) were former key members of groups that had pretty much created the genre, and as such one could only expect them to continue what they seemed to have a knack for.
Keith Emerson, let's face it, was almost indisputably the greatest keyboardist on earth, hands down (I think he was officially given the title by some renowned magazine twenty five times in a period of thirty years).
And Lake does just that; not that the lyrics are all bad ("the sadness on your shoulders like a wornout overcoat, in pockets greased and tattered hang the rags of your hopes," there's a good line), but they really need that extra oomph in order to make them work.

A large part of the band's appeal was the keyboard mastery of Emerson, who shows both superhuman chops and sophisticated compositional abilities on the classically tinged instrumental "The Barbarian," which opens the album.

I'd say it was OK to class it as an ELP album.
Carl Palmer - great drummer that he is - was never a major creative force in the band so on that score(pardon the pun) I think we can say it is. Certainly it's more ELP than 3 were.
Besides, it still can be condensed to the initials ELP anyway.
