Grey Gull Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early issues of Grey Gulls were high quality disc records at premium prices, using an unusual system of small grooves to be played with a small needle or stylus, giving about twice the playing time of the standard 10 inch 78 rpm record of the time, perhaps somewhat anticipating later EP records.
Most of Grey Gull's own recordings are by groups of studio musicians; the company also pressed records from masters leased from Emerson Records and Paramount Records.
A few interesting sides on the label were recorded by such musicians as Clarence Williams and Wilber Sweatman, as well as two sessions by Cliff Jackson's Krazy Kats, a good Harlem band of the era otherwise neglected by the recording industry.

 Emerson entry
Emerson is no system-builder in the mould of Descarates or Kant or Hegel, and his use of the essay form--inherited from his hero, Montaigne--corresponds to the radical epistemological and metaphysical openness of his thought: towards the end of his great essay 'Experience', he writes, 'I know better than to claim any completeness for my picture.
Emerson's philosophy is often taken as starting with his first book Nature (1836), where he expresses a sense of 'decorum and sanctity in the woods' and of vast 'prospects' for a culture of new thought and 'new men'.
Emerson's distinctive philosophical voice emerges in 'The American Scholar' (1837) where, in one of the reversals characteristic of his thinking, he writes of the scholar less as a man in a library than as a complete 'Man Thinking', whose 'dictionary' is a life of free 'action'.

THE EMERSON RECORDS STORY - Part 1 (1915-1920)
Emerson’s six-inch vertically cut discs, priced at 25¢ each and intended for play on Pathé and other sapphire-ball machines, were dubbed from European Pathé cylinder masters under license from the Paris-based Pathé Frères Phonograph Company, which was attempting to gain a foothold in the American market with its own label as well as client brands.
Although Emerson sometimes tried to claim credit for inventing the universal cut, the process was actually invented in 1899 by George T. Smallwood, who assigned his patent (#639,452) to Emerson in 1915.
Emerson’s familiar shield label design and treble clef trademark first appeared in June 1918 on nine-inch and ten-inch discs, which were inexplicably marketed as Gold Seal records, although the label color was actually blue (nine-inch) or fl (ten-inch).

Emerson's sheer mastery of the moog and flamboyant technical ability were incredible; his talent along with the dynamo drumming antics of Carl Palmer, won the band a legion of fans.
Emerson also had a penchant for lifting classical pieces without credit and making them his own, e.g., "The Barbarian" on ELP is taken from Bartok's "Allegro Barbaro" while "The Knife's Edge" is Janacek's "Sinfonietta." ELP also contained "Lucky Man," often cited as the first use of the moog synthesizer on a rock album.
Emerson was widely regarded as one of the most talented keyboardists in the history of rock, and Palmer one of the finest drummers.

An inveterate tinkerer, Emerson was awarded at least fourteen U.S. patents relating to sound recording and reproduction between 1893 and 1905, including one almost certainly unworkable device for magnetic recording using iron-needle deposits ground onto an abrasive-coated disc.
Emerson was also a key figure in conceiving and developing the five-inch Little Wonder record in 1914, while still employed by Columbia.
Emerson had no further connection with the company he founded after mid-1922, but he was far from inactive.

Kaufman reported years later that the major companies gave permission for him to record for smaller firms as long as pseudonyms were used, and Kaufman rarely knew at the time he attended a session what pseudonym would appear on a label afterwards.
Kaufman's voice was especially well-suited for the acoustic recording process since he could project his voice in the recording horn and make all words clear to listeners.
In August 1974 he recorded in his California home eight songs for a two-album set that reissued some of his old recordings, which means Kaufman's recording career spanned six decades, from 1914 to 1974.
