  Emery (mineral) - guideofcasinos.com
Emery (also known as iron spinel and hercynite) is a common impure variety of the mineral corundum.
In addition to aluminium oxide, emery contains an iron-bearing mineral such as magnetite or hematite and trace impurities such as magnesia, mullite, titania or silica.
Crushed or naturally eroded emery (known as fl sand) is used as an abrasive — for example, on an emery board, or as used in mechanical engineering as Emery cloth.

  Emery - LoveToKnow 1911
Emery occurs as a granular or massive, dark-coloured, dense substance, having much the appearance of an iron-ore. Its specific gravity varies with its composition from 3.7 to 4.3.
The mineral occurs as loose blocks and as lenticular masses or irregular beds in granular limestone, associated with crystalline schists.
The emery is found as detached blocks in a reddish soil, and as rounded masses embedded in a crystalline limestone associated with mica-schist, gneiss and granite.

Minerals range in composition from pure elements and simple salts to very complex silicates with thousands of known forms (organic compounds are usually excluded).
A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic substance with a definite chemical composition and a crystalline structure.
The largest group of minerals by far are the silicates, which are composed largely of silicon and oxygen, with the addition of ions such as aluminium, magnesium, iron, and calcium.

Industrial emery may contain a variety of other minerals and synthetic compounds such as magnesia, mullite, and silica.
Because it can be a mix of minerals, no definite Mohs hardness can be assigned: the hardness of corundum itself is 9 and that of some spinel-group minerals is near 8, but the hardness of others such as magnetite is near 6.
Crushed or naturally eroded emery (known as fl sand) is used as an abrasive — for example, on an emery board, as a traction enhancer in asphalt and tarmac mixtures, or as used in mechanical engineering as Emery cloth.

Emery is a fl granular rock formed by intergrowths of corundum with magnetite, hercinite or hematite.
Emery deposits may also form during regional metamorphism of aluminous sediments, such occurrences are described in the profile P06 (this volume).
The emery consisted of varying proportions of spinel (0 to 65%), magnetite (20-30%) and corundum (15 to 65%).

Corundum having a bright and glassy lustre, splintery and devoid of cleavage plane and inclusions is preferred by industry for the manufacture of superior grade abrasives.
Emery is an intimate mixture of alumina and iron oxide.
The reason for natural corundum being particularly suitable for certain kinds of grinding is its prominent basal cleavage that causes the crystal to break readily with a smooth flat surface at right-angles to the axis of elongation through successive reductions in size unlike synthetic corundum (alumina) which has a conchoidal fracture.

 Industrial minerals Summary
The mineral is also used during the smelting of an ore (the removal of a metal from its naturally occurring ore).
Industrial minerals are geological materials which are mined for their commercial value, which are not fuel (fuel minerals or mineral fuels) and are not sources of metals (metallic minerals).
Typical examples of industrial rocks and minerals are limestone, clays, sand, gravel, diatomite, kaolin, bentonite, silica, barite, gypsum, and talc.

Industrial Revolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The introduction of the steam engine greatly facilitated the removal of water and enabled shafts to be made deeper, enabling more mineral to be extracted.
These were developments that had begun before the Industrial Revolution, but the adoption of James Watt's more efficient steam engine with its separate condenser from the 1770s reduced the fuel costs of engines, making mines more profitable particularly in areas (such as Cornwall), where coal does not occur.
Apart from workshop lathes used by craftsmen, the first large machine tool was the cylinder boring machine, used for boring the large-diameter cylinders on early steam engines.
