Blastitude 15: Emil Beaulieau/Prurient/Immaculate:Grotesque tour hits Chicago
Emil was at his crowd-pleasing best from the perspective of physical comedy, really mugging for the eager audience.
Again, Emil started stalking the turntable, and shaking the weird canister-thing over his head, but this one was still his most "mellow" piece.
This was the WILD piece of the three, with Emil waving the contact mics in the air, twisting knobs all over hell and back, and really turning the whole setup into a bit of a royal rumble.

"Emil Beaulieau--aka Ron Lessard of the RRRecords label in Lowell, Mass-- is a noise nerd so exited about his record collection that he's worked it into his hyperactive performances.
Beaulieau's version of active listening involve playing his favorite noise albums (his "children," some of which he rubs with sandpaper or dirt, covers with paint, or nicks with razor blades) on a four-armed turntable called the Minutoli.
Every arm is a different grade, from child's top to hi-fi; some he's fixed in place to play locked grooves, so that something like a beat emerges from the hurricane, while another he uses like a wand to tap on the vinyl.

 EMIL BEAULIEAU
That these three should travel as if on a Kerouac-like mission in the same car on a cross-country tour, sharing the same “sound equipment” and serving as a guaranteed audience for each other when real ones are elusive, render the enterprise a success, quite apart from any substance behind the ‘art’ itself.
Emil Beaulieau, the main attraction of the Evening of Noise, put innovation to use.
Beaulieau seemed concerned when cries of protest where overheard from distant windows (the ‘concert’ was al fresco).

He then introduces himself as Emil Beaulieau and announced that he would be playing three tracks; the titles of these tracks were as follows: "Baby, You Look So Beautiful Tonight", "Baby, I Love what You've Done With Your Hair", and "Baby, What Are You Doing After the Show?".
Emil Beaulieau opted to play again the second night, albeit a much shorter set to start the night off.
The set that night was dedicated to the woman that he loved; he then started warbling some strange sounds that didn't make sense until he brought out the record with the words "Rey Poo" painted on it.

 RRRecords
If you aren’t familiar with the Emil experience, his weapon of mass destruction is a four armed turntable named after its creator, the Minutoli.
Yep, four arms, at least a few of which are locked into fixed positions (as in they don’t glide toward the center of the record), thus allowing for lots and lots of on-the-spot lock grooves (as in the same 1.8 seconds of music over and over again, and again).
Because Emil’s set always seems violently improvised (more so than most, he seems to decide ON THE SPOT what’s going to happen next), the methodology doesn’t always correlate with the band being played.

Live, Emil is a fireball-dance of operation, jolting the instruments (turntables, LPs, pedals, contact mic inside a tuna can, etc.), laughing at his own summoning of the quaking collages, torrents of aural twitches all wet-mouthed with zeal and pure life.
Emil was/is touring with other New Englander's Sickness and Karlhienz, which I'll expound on more later when I dig into New England, the 5 LP RRR 20 aniversary set, with those guys and 8 others.

 Emil Beaulieau
Emil Beaulieau is the nom de plume of Ron Lessard, who is without argument the single most important persona in American noise.
Love it or hate it, the RRR (Lessard's label that he started in 1980) cassettes that you could buy from Ron's Xeroxed record lists throughout the 80's turned many people on to the real underground sounds.
His sounds feature modified record players with up to 4 tone arms, and records that he presses himself made especially for the live performances.
