Emil Holub (October 7, 1847 - February 21, 1902) was a Czech doctor, traveller in Africa and writer.
He was born in Holice in eastern Bohemia and in 1872 obtained a degree as a doctor of medicine at Prague University.
Holub felt satisfaction in two great shows at home - in 1891 in Vienna and in 1892 in Prague.

In June 1886 the party crossed the Zambezi west of the Victoria Falls, and explored the then almost unknown region between that river and Its tributary the Kafue.
When beyond the Kafue the camp was attacked by the Mashukulumbwe, and Holub was obliged to retrace his steps.
Holub died at Vienna on the 21st of February 1902.

In short, it took a long time before Holub received official permission to travel north and, in the meantime, he fully devoted himself to the studies of flowers and birds on the coast of South Africa.
Then malaria caused the death of two of Holub's friends, and a third one had to be taken back to Cape Town due to complete exhaustion.
This was the case with Emil Holub, who was at last granted the much called for pension in January 1902, a month before he died.

AN exhibition on the life, works and travels of Dr Emil Holub, one of the most diligent and interesting explorers of the 19th century, was opened at the Duggan Cronin Art Gallery last Wednesday.
Mr Jaroslav Siro, the ambassador of the Czech Republic, officially opened the exhibition and reflected on the close relationship between his country and Kimberley which was initiated by Holub.
Emil Holub was born on 7 October 1847 in the Eastern Bohemian town of Holice.

His first three trips (1872-1879) took him to the border country of the Transvaal, Betschuana and Matabele Land, to the source of the Limpopo and into the Marutse-Mabunda Realm, to the Sambesi and the Victoria Falls.
In 1879, Holub returned to Prague with his extensive zoological and ethnological collections.
As Holub and his wife depended on his lectures for their income, he would often ignore the fevers that kept troubling him since his return from Africa.

The ethnographical collection of the physician Dr. Emil Holub (1847-1902) from Holice near Pardubice originated during two expeditions in Southern Africa from 1872-1879 and 1883-1887.
Holub collected some 60.000 ethnographical and natural scientific objects which were given later to hundreds of different museums and collections, among them the Munich collection with some 150 objects.
Holub´s journeys were directed amongst others towards the Tswana groups resident in present-day Botswana and the so-called Lozi Empire which are both considered individually in detailed sections on habitation areas, climate, flora, fauna, settlement types, social organization, economy and religious ideas.

The Czech traveller Emil Holub (1847-1902) collected several of these vessels from the Ngwato, a group of Tswana-speaking people whose capital was the point of departure for many Europeans who travelled further north into the interior.
Holub travelled into the interior as far as Shoshong in 1874, and passed through it again the following year.
Holub left South Africa in 1879 with ethnographic specimens from about thirty tribes and about 30 000 natural history specimens.

While serving as Research Assistant in the Department of History and as an Extra Mural Tutor in German at the University of Zambia from 1968-1970 and again from 1974-1975, she translated Emil Holub's Travels North of the Zambesi, 1885-1886 into English published by Manchester University Press in 1975.
