Emil Petaja (1915-2000) - SFWA News
Emil Petaja, a science fiction and fantasy writer whose career spanned seven decades, died at his San Francisco home on August 17th.
Petaja self-published this book of poems by running-off copies on the mimeograph machines at Montana State University, where he was a student in creative writing.
Petaja was roaming the lakes and hills of the Big Sky Country when he came across the discarded pulp periodical; he read it, and the experience changed his life.

From the pen of Nebula nominee writer Emil Petaja comes The Star Mill, the second volume in his stunning series of science fantasies based on the Finnish national epic, Kalevala.
In each volume, one of the great heroes of the Kalevala is reborn in one of his genetic descendents in the far future to prevent the return of evil alien forces, the Pahaliset, who once tried to conquer Earth in the dim ages of Finland's past.
Based on the myths and legends of the Finns, Emile Petaja spins an enthralling tale chronicling the fate of the last of the three genetic reincarnations of their great hero-Gods of ancient times.

Petaja had a large collection of books about the movies, as well as an even larger collection of so-called photoplay books - movie tie-in editions dating from the silent film and early sound era.
Illustrating Petaja's guide are dozens of dustjackets and scene stills, each of which graced the original editions.
Petaja also offers a short prologue, as well as a longer history of photoplay books.

Emil Petaja (pronounced Puh-TIE-uh, apparently -- I had always thought it Puh-TAH-huh) was a Montana-born writer of Finnish descent.
Petaja wrote stories and poems, some Lovecraftian, and began to sell to the pulps in 1942.
I suspect Petaja could do a little better than this -- on the face of it this seems possibly an uncharacteristic work.

 REH Bookshelf - P
Howard wrote to Petaja, 14 December 1934, thanking him for the sonnet; but the account in One Who Walked Alone suggests that this letter from REH is received shortly before Christmas, 1934, and states, "He showed me the sonnet a couple of months ago."
REH to Emil Petaja, 23 July 1935: "I read your recent poem: 'Witch's Bercuese' in the recent Marvel Tales and liked it very much; the rhythm is smooth and musical and the somber motif is fascinating."
REH to Emil Petaja July 23, 1935: "Glad you like the bits of verse I sometimes use for chapter headings.

And I figured I ought to give Emil Petaja another chance.
It's one of 8 Ace Doubles by Petaja, and it's the first of a pair of linked novels, the other being Doom of the Green Planet (1968).
As I've mentioned before, Tom Purdom has had a rather bifurcated SF career -- he published a passel of stories and five novels between the late 50s and early 70s, then was all but silent for almost two decades before returning with an extremely impressive array of recent stories.
