Emil Seidel (December 13, 1864 – June 24, 1947) was the mayor of Milwaukee from 1910 to 1912.
In 1910, Seidel was elected mayor of Milwaukee, becoming the first socialist mayor of a major city in the United States.
Seidel then chose to run for Vice President of the United States on the Socialist ticket with Eugene V. Debs, and the pair won a respectable 897,011 votes in the 1912 presidential election.

May Wood Simons in which Seidel stated his interests and position on vocational education and the role of education in building a socialist society; and undated manuscripts which provide Seidel's comparison of the management of railroads under capitalism and socialism, and the relationship of railroad terminals to city planning.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Emil Seidel was born on 13 December 1864 in Ashland, Pennsylvania and moved to Wisconsin with his parents in 1865, and to Milwaukee in 1869.

After the election of 1910, the Socialists -- Mayor Emil Seidel and the Common Council -- raised the minimum wage and made the eight-hour day standard for city workers.
The administration was praised for its compassion and efficiency, but Republicans and Democrats who were humiliated by their defeat, put all their effort into defeating the Socialists in 1912.
Seidel lost the election and the Common Council lost its Socialist majority.

He settled in Milwaukee and in 1904 Seidel and eight other socialists were elected as city aldermen.

Seidel"s orchestra recorded a dozen more songs through early 1928 at Gennett.

This plan was submitted in spring 1910, but the Common Council indefinitely postponed the resolution, which favored an outer harbor, and rejected the Randolph plan.
In October 1911, Mayor Emil Seidel, by previous authorization, appointed a Harbor Commission of nine citizens of Milwaukee, conversant with harbor and shipping matters, to study the needs of Milwaukee with respect to harbor facilities, and to act in an advisory capacity to the Common Council.
The first meeting of the new Commission was held on November 22, 1911, at which it effected an organization with William George Bruce as Chairman.

Band leader Isham Jones was first to have a hit with the tune in 1930 although it was first recorded by Emil Seidel in 1927.
Hoagy’s biggest seller was composed shortly after he abandoned the legal profession and became a full time composer and performer.

Around 3 AM that morning Hoagy Carmichael arrived in Richmond with Emil Seidel and seven members of Seidel's band.

He is part of a tradition of Milwaukee Socialist mayors that began with Emil Seidel and continued with Daniel Hoan, whose long career ended in 1940 when he was defeated by an independent progressive named Carl Zeidler, Frank Zeidler’s older brother.
The brothers were never enemies despite differences in political philosophy, and Carl Zeidler was a local hero who had resigned his post to join the Naval Reserve and who had been killed when his ship was torpedoed off South Africa.
