The discoverer of this new effect is physicist Emil Wolf, who, along with Max Born, wrote the definitive textbook Principles of Optics.
A mechanic analog to Wolf's discovery is a pair of tuning forks with nearly identical resonant frequencies (pitches).
Wolf and his colleagues have shown that such a cloud can produce shifts that closely mimic the Doppler effect.

 Physics Today October 2000
As fate would have it, the job ultimately fell to Emil Wolf, now Wilson Professor of Optical Physics at the University of Rochester and a scholar of considerable renown, but then only an eager young man in his late twenties.
Remarkably, the book dealt presciently with such issues as coherence theory and holography--holography, no doubt, because the man who recommended Wolf to Born eight years earlier was Dennis Gabor, the 1971 Nobel laureate and discoverer of holography.
In the 1960s, "Born and Wolf," as it came to be known, was where one went to learn about subtleties like the EwaldOseen extinction theorem or the WienerKhintchine theorem.

SELECTED WORKS OF EMIL WOLF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
This invaluable book presents most of the important papers of Emil Wolf, published over half-a-century.
It covers chiefly diffraction theory (especially the analysis of the focal region), the theory of direct and inverse scattering, phase-space methods in quantum mechanics, the foundation of radiometry, phase conjugation and coherence theory.
Several papers which have become classics of the optical literature are included, such as those on Wolf's rigorous formulation of the theory of partial coherence and partial polarization, the introduction of diffraction tomography, and his discovery of correlation-induced shifts of spectral lines (often called the Wolf effect).

The chapter also presents an account of the principles of diffraction tomography - a refinement of the CAT scan - to which Emil Wolf, one of the authors, has made a basic contribution by formulating in 1969 what is generally regarded to be the basic theorem in this field.
Other new topics covered in this new edition include interference with broad-band light, which introduces the reader to an important phenomenon discovered relatively recently by Emil Wolf, namely the generation of shifts of spectral lines and other modifications of spectra of radiated fields due to the state of coherence of a source.

Born & Wolf were well-acquainted with antenna aperture theory, and were among the first to write that the human eye could resolve 5X better than aperture theory would predict.
This they credited to involuntary eye movements called flicks and saccades, which when combined with the brain's ability to do signal processing, was able to produce much better resolution than would have been predicted by the diameter of the retinal rods.
The Born and Wolf Principles of Optics text is, without a doubt, a classic.

An icon in the world of optics, Emil Wolf laid the foundations of contemporary physical optics by documenting the concept of spatial coherence before lasers were introduced.
This powerful concept has influenced many areas of optical science and engineering, several of which are discussed in this book and are intended to pay homage to one of the great minds of physical optics.
The material is presented by major experts in the field, many of them closely connected to Emil Wolf's Institute of Optics at University of Rochester.
