Bouchard was a tall and strong competitor who used his physical attributes to advantage although he was never known as a bully by his peers.
Bouchard developed into a tough stay-at-home defenseman whose physical game was a superb complement to defense partner Doug Harvey, one of the game's all-time great rushing blueliners.
And it shouldn't be overlooked that Bouchard's exceptional hockey sense and accurate passing often started the offensive rushes for which the Canadiens became famous in the 1940s and 1950s.

Bouchard worked at the Everett and Pacific mills and retired from Finberg Supply Co.
The widower of Matilda "Claire" (Cormier) Bouchard, he leaves sons Richard L. and his wife Patricia of Haverhill and Robert E. of Lawrence; sisters Evelyn Benson of Andover and Germaine Andrews of Methuen; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In 1940, Irvin took a verse from a World War I poem, "In Flanders Fields," and had it emblazoned on the locker room wall: "To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high."
Bouchard passed the torch to The Rocket, who in turn passed it along to other former captains of hockey's most storied team until it landed in the hands of Pierre Turgeon, the captain today.
