Christian was born into a musical family in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, most prominently his older brother Frank Christian was a noted cornetist and bandleader.

Frank Joseph Christian was born in the Bywater neighborhood of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana.
Christian initially agreed and rehearsed with the band before it left for the north, but then backed down as he had a full schedual of job offers in New Orleans and thought this less risky than leaving town.
Christian was replaced by Nick LaRocca, and thus Frank Christian missed his chance to be in the Original Dixieland Jass Band which made the first jazz recordings in 1917.

By 1919, the ODJB was so popular that the group was asked to come to England and record there.
Trombonist Edwards and pianist Ragas couldn't make the trip and were replaced by Emile Christian and Billy Jones.
Edwards rejoined the band in 1920, but Raga, replaced by Jones for the England trip and later by Frank Signorelli, never recorded with the band after 1918.

His brother Frank Joseph Christian was a popular bandleader, and also a wonderful hot cornetist.
In 1919 and 1920, he toured England with the ODJB playing with them in London, and also contributed his tune "Satanic Blues" to their repertory.
After a return to New York city and a brief period with the 'Original Memphis Five', he returned to Europe where he played, into the mid 1930s, with various Jazz bands (both 'Black' and 'White' bands) in various European cities, including Berlin, and also in India.
