Delahayes of this period are recognized to be some of the most beautiful automobiles ever built.
In 1954, Delahaye was taken over by Hotchkiss, who shut down automobile production and, after producing trucks with the Hotchkiss-Delahaye nameplate for a few more months, dropped the Delahaye name and closed this chapter of automotive history.

The quality and results of his cars fully designed by Delahaye (even the engine, which was rare enough at this time) convinced numerous and often prestigious customers … the Duchess of Uzès for instance, and in 1897, Emile Delahaye realised that his firm was not big enough to meet the demand of customers.
Until 1933, the Delahaye Cars Company (Société des Automobiles Delahaye) produced cars which were reputed for their solidity and stamina but also lorries, engines for industrial purposes and competitive motorboats (several speed world records with boats).

Les premières Delahaye, très semblables aux Benz, avaient un moteur horizontal de faible puissance, monté à l'arrière, et un entraînement par courroie.
Emile Delahaye se retira en 1901, année où la conduite par volant fut standardisée ; les anciens modèles à transmission par courroie furent fabriqués jusqu'en 1904 ; en 1902 sortit un modèle pourvu d'un moteur vertical à l'avant et d'une transmission par courroie.
Comme les autres marques françaises, Delahaye, suivant les progrès de la technique, adopta en 1908 un bloc-moteur avec soupapes latérales sur le modèle 32, 12/16 CV de 1,9 l, mais jusqu'en 1911 la transmission par chaîne fut maintenue.
