  Biography of Emilio Carranza - Family History
Emilio Carranza Rodriguez was the fourth child born to Sebastián Carranza Cepeda (1882-1973) and María Dolores Rodríguez Gómez (1877-1975).
Emilio's grandfather, Sebastián Carranza de la Garza (1848-1921) was brother of Venustiano Carranza (1859-1920), who was President of Mexico from 1917 until his assassination in 1920.
Emilio's father was a businessman and government official who, at the time of Emilio's death in 1928, was an accountant at the Mexican Consulate in New York City.

On the night of July 12th 1928, Captain Carranza was killed near Mt. Holly New Jersey while returning to Mexico after a successful goodwill flight from Mexico City to Washington DC in June of 1928.
Captain Carranza was flying the 'Mexico-Excelsior' aircraft, a Ryan Brougham Monoplane type B-1 built in San Diego, California by the B. Mahoney Aircraft Corporation, and which was essentially identical to the famed 'Spirit of St. Louis'.
Captain Emilio Carranza was posthumously promoted to the rank of General and an aviation award was established in his honor, the Emilio Carranza Medal for Merit.
