	Emilio Lussu
		Emilio Lussu (Armungia[?], Cagliari, 1890 - Rome 1975), a soldier, a politician and a writer from Sardinia, Italy.
		Lussu was elected to the Italian parliament in 1921 and in 1924 was among those deputies who "retired on Aventine hill" after the murder of Giacomo Matteotti[?].
		Lussu married Joyce Salvatori[?], now better known as Joyce Lussu, a poet from a noble family of Marches[?], an Italian notable intellectual whose early works, due to her international education, were translated into Italian (by Benedetto Croce[?]).

		A strong liberal, Emilio Lussu had been an officer in the Italian Army during the War, was elected a Deputy from the province of Cagliari in Sardinia, soon found himself, apparently to his own surprise, a leader of the antiFascists in his own region.
		Touching briefly but dramatically on his own exploits, Lussu skims over the facts that he dodged his enemies successfully until 1927, evaded a dozen traps set for him, killed one of the men who tried to seize him and was freed despite pressure from the Fascists.
		At one meeting Signer Pietro Lissia told Lussu that unless the cause of liberty was defended to the last drop of blood, it would be a lasting disgrace ''for us and for our sons." Then he added: ''Not that I have any sons myself." He next appeared as the representative in Sardinia of Mussolini's Government.

		C'era il libro di Emilio Lussu, bellissimo, di cui mi aveva attratto la scoperta che lui faceva della guerra come un fatto di classe: dentro la stessa trincea c'erano i contadini e i borghesi, e i contadini seguivano le vicende della guerra come se fosse una calamità naturale.
		La guerra che Lussu descriveva non era una guerra di popolo, era una guerra con delle logiche di classe molto forti.
		Di rado, quanto nell'anno sull'altopiano (i fatti descritti nel libro di Lussu e ripresi, per sintesi, da Rosi nel film vanno dal maggio del 1916 all'estate del '17), la divisione per classi nella società italiana fu tanto netta, tanto evidente il formarsi di "una nuova mentalità di rivolta e di insofferenza".

		Even where overtures for collaboration came from the side of the British who, it is known, at one time approached Lussu, head of the Action Party, the negotiations broke down when Lussu made a condition of collaboration the overthrow of the monarchy; the British insisted on saving it.
		In Sardinia, Emilio Lussu founded the Action Movement, with no other ideology than armed violence against fascist armed violence.
		This movement was sufficiently dangerous to the fascist regime to impel Mussolini to assassinate Carlo Rosselli near Paris in June 1937.

		It was to be the 1970s, however—the decade that in Italy would remembered as "the years of lead", years characterised by social insecurity, political conflict and armed terrorism—which would provide Rosi with the opportunity to make what are undoubtedly several of his greatest films.
