  Emilio Salgari - FAQ salgariane

Having for decades been considered among lesser things, today the work of Emilio Salgari is the focus of renewed attention.
All expressed in a truly modern style and a sense of rhythm quite uncommon for the period: based on action and the frenzied succession of events, Salgari's tales have not surprisingly seen very successful comic strip and TV film adaptations.
A renewer in children's literature, Salgari can be said to follow in the footsteps of the prevalently Anglo-American tradition of sea novels, holding his own alongside the likes of Defoe, Marryat, Ballantyne and Melville.

Emilio Salgari was one of the best adventure writers of the early 20th century, although he wrote only in Italian and never left Verona, the city of his birth.
I (and most Italian children) grew up reading these swashbuckling adventure novels; most were about pirates as noble social rebels with their own code of honor, fighting the bad guys by land and by sea in the Caribbean, Malaysia and other exotic locales.

In 1900, as the book "Le Tigri di Mompracem" was being published, he moved back to Turin: the financial difficulties that were to plague Salgari in the following years began.
In the summer of 1903 his beloved wife had leave the family to seek a cure for her ailments; in 1906, Emilio severed his contract with Donath and went to Bemporad, for whom he wrote as many as nineteen novels between 1907 and 1911.
In 1910, Ida's health worsened rapidly and the writer tried to commit suicide; in April of the following year, just a few months after his wife had been admitted into an asylum, he took his own life; just as his father had done in 1889, and his son was to do in 1931.
