This is why, for example, the DS9 crew themselves have "TNG-style" uniforms in the beginning of this episode and, even after TNG had gone off the air, the dress uniforms on DS9 (as well as on Earth in "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost") were TNG style.
Jadzia Dax and Trills seen after this episode are distinctly different from the Trills in the TNG episode "The Host." There is considerably more depth to the relationship between the host and symbiont in Trill joining than described in the TNG episode.
Miles O'Brien was brought aboard DS9 in this episode and made a part of the senior staff because the producers felt that Colm Meaney was too talented an actor to confine his character to a transporter room.

ST Universe Episode Review - Deep Space Nine | Season 1 | Emissary
A brilliant pilot episode, Emissary successfully introduces all the main characters, establishes the setting, and lays a surprisingly large amount of groundwork for all that was to follow.
Pilot episodes are often just there to perform a function — introduce the characters and the concept of the show, and have a showy finale to impress everyone.
Emissary breaks the mould by actually telling a damn good, and unusual, story as well as introducing all the necessary elements.

ST Universe Episode Review - Deep Space Nine | Season 1 | Past Prologue
DS9 gets off to a great start with its first regular episode — a story that manages to flesh out a number of characters, introduce some new ones (already!), and further develop the political make-up of the region, with a very well written episode.
DS9 pitched itself as representing the “less than perfect” side of the Star Trek universe, and this episode explores the crew’s personal conflicts very well.
She expands on what she said in Emissary about not believing that the Federation will stay — even going so far as to say she doesn’t believe they should be here at all.

One of them is that the internal logic of the episode doesn't work (there's no way to justify Tahna possessing the antimatter converter without making Odo seem utterly incompetent), and the other is that it was just too damned early in the season for a "loyalties get tested" show.
DS9 has the opportunity to show us a lot about the mechanics of the Federation, not to mention a great deal about how it's viewed outside the normal spheres of influence we see.
Along the same lines, since DS9 is mostly confined to Bajor and its environs, we have a unique opportunity to see the true culture of a _planet_ in the Trek universe, something else we've never seen.

As was becoming the tradition, the torch was passed to DS9 by Jean-Luc Picard himself, with the Enterprise-D docked at one of the upper pylons.
It all ended with the climatic battle for Cardassia, where the Dominion is defeated once and for all, and the Emissary defeating Gul Dukat and the Pah Raiths (sp?), ultimately being called to the Celestial Temple by the Prophets.
DS9 at its best was action and intrigue, with characters we grew to know and love, set in an era we are all familiar with.

The Ten Smartest Things the Powers That Be Did to DS9
The powers that be in charge of DS9 made many smart moves over the years in making DS9 stand out from the rest of the Trek universe.
DS9, set on a Cardassian station in Bajoran space, broke that unwritten rule when it made the Starfleet officers a minority population to the Bajoran majority.
Even if the show had gone on to fall on its face and never do another noteworthy episode in its entire run--which, thankfully, was not the case--the producers and the fans would always have been able to look upon "Duet" with pride.

Sisko's role as the Emissary was of unexpected value when he was able to convince the Prophets to intervene on behalf of the Bajoran people to destroy the Dominion fleet in the wormhole (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels").
Her beliefs held that Benjamin Sisko was the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy, but she sometimes found it difficult to reconcile the fact that her commanding officer was a religious icon (DS9: "Destiny").
Note that DS9: "Rules of Engagement" suggests that O'Brien joined Starfleet in 2350, although the Setlik III backstory establishes that he was already in the service aboard the Rutledge in 2347.

The cover art for "Emissary" is right on for this particular novel as it displays an entire cast picture which at the time of this novelizations release was very helpful.
"Emissary" is of course the novelization of Star Trek Deep Space Nine's pilot episode.
With that catalyst in mind, "Emissary" begins with Commander Sisko's arrival and the arrival of the rest of the cast to include introductions to Major Kira Nerys, Odo and Quark.

Sisko, as discoverer of the wormhole and its inhabitants, is therefore the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy.
EMISSARY suffers from a lot of the flaws that have plagued Star Trek spin-off pilots, although I think it has so far been the most successful.
The introduction of the characters is mostly handled well, although there are a few clumsy moments, and a lot of the people and their makeup don't appear to be quite in their regular form yet.

Based on the pilot Episode of DS9, it pretty much sticks to the plot of the episode, but it doesn't make the mistake so many do.
The author doesn't try to stretch the episode to fit 275 pages, but instead fills in all the extra with background for the characters, both major and minor, so that we have a better idea of who we will be seeing through the series.
It is relatively well written, although a few scenes do fall flat on their face when the author fails to adequately convey sarcasm or humor, and the prophets just didn't make the transition from TV to novel very well.

For example, the first episode of TNG "Encounter at Farpoint" had an initial stardate of 41153.7--if the revised stardate system began on January 1, 2323--that would place that date in "Encounter at Farpoint" on February 25, 2364.

There are times when two episodes are filmed almost simultaneously and the one that finishes first may air first, so it's easier not to feature a stardate, or put down "Captain's log, supplemental".
