Emissary - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
The Emissary of the Prophets was a pivotal figure in Bajoran religion who, according to their prophecy, would save Bajor by finding the Celestial Temple and could speak to the Prophets.
The ancient texts concerning the Emissary said that the Prophets would "call him to them" and that they would "give him back his life." In 2369, Kai Opaka told Commander Benjamin Sisko after his arrival at Deep Space 9 that he was to be the Emissary, after reading his pagh.
The Emissary's purpose was to initiate this battle, as Sisko did when he shattered the tablet on Deep Space 9 (the "Gateway to the Celestial Temple") and released the beings inside.

She leads Sisko to the Orb of Prophecy, which grants him his first vision: he is mentally transported to Gilgo Beach, years earlier (circa 2354), at the time and place he met Jennifer, his wife.
"Emissary" and its subsequent series presents the first (and so far only) Trek premise in which the main setting is not a starship, being set instead aboard space station Deep Space 9.
As of "Emissary," the Ferengi are mainly entrepreneurs and the Ferengi Alliance is a politically neutral economic power.

The newer series haven't done as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation, but last year tnn reportedly paid $364 million for the rights to show reruns of various Trek episodes, even though they have already been aired dozens of times.
By contrast, the Deep Space Nine captain turned out to be a religious emissary for an alien race, and Voyager's Captain Janeway spent most of her trip fretting over human (and other species') rights at the expense of her crew.
Earlier this year, feminist Donna Minkowitz argued in the Nation magazine that "[Enterprise] is the first Star Trek really interested in punishing women." That's an exaggeration, but Trek does seem to be returning to the gender roles of the original series, in which Kirk was a spectacular cad.

Star Trek: The Animated Series, the Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, was a continuation of the voyages of the USS Enterprise, previously featured in the original Star Trek series.
Gene Roddenberry said that if he had known there would be more live action Star Trek in the future, the animated series would have been far more logical and "canonable," or he might not have produced the animated series at all.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country confirmed Kirk's middle name as "Tiberius", a name first revealed in "Bem".

Three more films were released ("Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" taking the highest at the box office of all the films until the release of First Contact in 1996), until Gene Roddenberry, encouraged by the renewed vigour of the show at the cinemas, decided it was time to create a new series.

After six years of exceptional scores for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, it was only natural that producers Rick Berman and Michael Pillar would carry Dennis McCarthy over to their new spin-off series, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE.
Dennis had one week to compose the theme for STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE and another two weeks to write the score for the pilot episode, "Emissary." His result is an energetic, but even tempered score which mixes high-paced action with ethereal, mysterious movements which mostly underscore Sisko's encounter with the aliens in the wormhole.

Shortly after arriving in Bajoran Space, Sisko met with Bajoran Kai Opaka Sulan, who told him the he was the Emissary to the Prophets, foretold in Bajoran scripture, destined to find the Celestial Temple of the Prophets, home of the Bajoran gods.
Sisko was skeptical, but soon after an encounter with the Orb of Prophecy and Change, he and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax discoverd the Bajoran Wormhole, an artificially created passageway to the distant Gamma Quadrant created by the beings that the Bajorans consider to be gods.
Sisko requested a Bajoran national for the position of first officer, and the post was given to former Bajoran freedom fighter Kira Nerys, who was staunchly against the Federations presence on Bajor, believing the Federation to be little different from her former Cardassian oppressors.

The energised version used in later series' (not included on this album) was a smart move to musically move the show from its ponderous beginning to the science fiction epic it eventually became.
I distinctly remember the original trailers for the show promising lots of action, but in fairness most of those were taken from the prologue which sets up the beginnings of then Commander Ben Sisko and his son and the tragic loss of his wife during the first major encounter with the Borg.

The Bajorans may be interpreting the prophecy to mean that "our" Ben Sisko fulfilled it, but if Mirror Ben Sisko doesn't fulfill the prophecy in the same way then the writer of the prophecy in ancient times couldn't have been envisioning Sisko as being the one to fulfill the prophecy.
Since they diverge it's also possible that the Bajoran from the forth season that was on the sailing ship could be the emissary (The episode where Sisko and he both question who is the proper Emissary and the Prophets choose Sisko, maybe in the Mirror Universe they picked the other guy).

My enjoyment and appreciation of Star Trek has the tendency to wax and wane.
The end result was an often frustrating mix of engrossing episodes (The Way of the Warrior, Broken Link, Apocalypse Rising, Tears of the Prophets, The Siege of AR-558) mixed with plenty that I found rather overrated (In the Pale Moonlight, season 6's Dominion-occupied DS9 arc).
Consequently, I was pretty curious to revisit the first episode and see how it all began, and while watching Emissary worked as a curiosity for a while, it wasn't long before boredom set in.
