Emley Moor (located at 53°36′N 1°39′W) is an area of moorland near the village of Emley, near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England (national grid reference: SE222128).
Its reinforced concrete tower is the tallest free-standing structure on the British Isles at a height of 330.4 metres (1084 feet).
On the other hand, the Emley Moor tower is taller than the Eiffel Tower, which is just 300 m (984 ft) high, with an additional 24m (79 ft) antenna on top.

All Emley Moor relay transmitters will also have been affected, which basically means most of Yorkshire and the North Midlands.
Emley Moor is one of the few manned transmitters sites and an engineer there confirmed the lightning strike this evening.
I live around 10 miles from Emley moore and there was a severe downpore at the time.

Emley Moor is a vital site for television transmission due to its elevated position and the TV Mast is visible from most parts of Mirfield.
The first mast went into service on 3rd November 1956 and brought television transmissions to the Yorkshire area which was a difficult area to cover due to the steep Pennine hills and the long distance to the low-lying areas of the East Riding.
Not surprisingly, the local people had no wish for another mast to be erected on Emley Moor.

It was replaced in 1964 by a taller 385m (1265ft) guyed mast, which was brought down on 19 March 1969, by a combination of strong winds and the weight of ice.

Emley Moor has traditionally been used for Independent radio broadcasts and Holme Moss has traditionally been used for BBC radio transmissions.
The new service could either use Holme Moss or Emley Moor – using a power in the region of 5kW; the service could aim for the reception produced by amalgamating the BBC Leeds and BBC Sheffield coverage areas (in the case of a Holme Moss service).
As the region is very hilly some frequencies are re-used on either side of the Yorkshire moors – since the moors themselves act to reflect the transmissions away from the other area using the same frequency.

It was part of a piece of work we did during my degree looking at the impacts of cold weather on the area.

After days of gales and rain, yesterday was bright and clear here, so Peter and I used my Tx and Rx last night (Sept 15) to send signals over a 20.3km path between Edgemount, about 8k NW of Sheffield, to the base of the Emley Moor TV mast.
We started proceedings at dusk and I used one of these 'cheapo' 1 million candlepower spotlights to indicate to Peter (Tx) exactly where I was at Emley.
The received note is very scratchy but I know that the power waveform for the laser is not exactly a square wave.

Emley Moor is located just south of Wakefield not far from the M1 Junc 38 and in close proximity of the other Yorkshire club, Redfearns.
The club is hosted by Woolley Bank Farm and occupies a section of woodland directly behind a Caravan site.
From Junction 38,M1 on the roundabout carry on around and take the third exit and follow the directions above from then on.

Before the advent of the Wensleydale relay (and later, Bilsdale) the Dales struggled to receive television.

Terrestrial TV Our nearest TV transmitter is at Stanton Moor (almost exactly due North from the middle of Winster, about 3km away).
Our nearest "Freeview" (ie terrestrial digital) TV transmitter is quite a long way away at Emley Moor - near Huddersfield.
People at the top of the village may get a useable signal (you'll need a high-power aerial and possibly a signal amplifier), but by the time you get down to the about The Flat, the hillside near Birchover gets in the way, so this is no good for most of the village.
