Endervidualism Agora - Emma - reviewed by Tom Ender
One of the ideas behind the scenes in Emma is the “law of unintended consequences.” Normally one encounters this idea involved with a central planning agency of some kind.
This “success” at match-making sets Emma on the mission to pair up the people she decides need this service, principally her new friend Harriet, first with the Vicar, Mr.
Emma herself is exceedingly opinionated and manipulative which feeds her ambition to make matches.

A self-appointed matchmaker, Emma takes great delight in the romantic notion of playing Cupid and attempting to pair up those she feels are suited to one another.
And Emma, so concerned with what is right for others, neglects the heart that is actually the most important of all: Her own.

 "Emma" Review: Christian Spotlight
Emma is for those who enjoy a clean, light hearted, easy-paced romance.
Emma, the film's namesake, is the 21 year old, beloved daughter of a wealthy, country gentleman.
Emma is not without fault however, because she is a hopeless matchmaker as well as at times a bit of a snob.

Emma is a charming movie, full of the splendor and romance characteristic of the original novel.
Soon, we notice that the true point of the story is Emma’s ignoring her own romantic unattachment in favor of “improving” the love lives of her friends.
Emma successfully manages to avoid boring the audience (a fate not shared by Persuasion, another recent Austen screen adaptation), but fails to draw us far enough into the story to feel close to the characters.

Emma is a faithful adaptation of Austen's most cherished novel and unlike Clueless...the audience has more than a passing interest in the characters here.
Emma is delightful, a breezy romance comedy of complication and confusion, with Gwynneth Paltrow a winning delight as the titular Ms.
There are moments in Emma where Paltrow adopts a facial expression so utterly perfect that her infuriating ability to make you care about her despite her pettiness and manipulation seems drawn from the soul of Austen's novel.

Emma Woodhouse is a wealthy, charming and completely self-satisfied young woman who's convinced she knows what's best for everyone.
Emma proves particularly inept at coupling the teen-age Harriet Smith (Toni Collette, the star of "Muriel's Wedding") with whom she considers the proper gentleman.
Yet Knightley has a tendency to scold Emma for meddling and - in the film's most powerful sequence - he really lets her have it for an unforgivable breach of etiquette.

Emma Woodhouse is, of course, the queen bee of busybodies, forever meddling in everyone else's love life, yet quite unable to figure out her own.
So Harriet, a country bumpkin who feels flattered at Emma's attentions, breaks off her engagement to the local farmer she loves and becomes fixated instead on a local vicar (Alan Cumming) — though he seems to be more interested in Emma.
Emma also interferes with Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor, in a role that is a far cry from the one he plays in "Trainspotting"), eligible gadabout son of a prominent neighbor — but he has some romantic notions of his own.

Gwyneth does a superior job of conveying Emma's own sense of superiority, which is particularly necessary for this heroine, the sole example in Austen's work of a protagonist at the top of the social ladder.
Jane Austen's Emma is a biting comedy of manners in which Emma Wodehouse --- played winningly by Gwyneth Paltrow --- sets about making suitable matches amongst her society friends to such an extent that she completely ignores her own life to the point of shambles.
Equally talented and highly amusing is Sophie Thompsom (Emma Thompson's sister) as the plain Miss Bates, whom Emma has taken it upon herself to match with a dashing man, claiming the farmer Miss Bates has chosen for herself is lacking as a suitor.

In summary, I felt that the film makers did too many jarring alterations in the story for the sake of the movie's star, Paltrow, which is somewhat upsetting, and which is yet another reason that she is miscast.
I hate to give Emma one star because I think Paltrow's performance is flawless and love that british accent she piles on but Emma was so boring, pretentious and completely dowdy as can be.

The recent comedy "Clueless" borrowed the plot of "Emma" in a broad way, changing Emma from Victorian English country princess, into a pampered Southern California Valley Girl, and her hypochondriac father, Mr.

This is a great film and I love the story of 'Emma', for me though, Miss Bates is by far the best cast role, Sophie Thompson plays her exactly as I imagined her to be when I read the book!
Emma is an exceptional character and an exceptional actress was needed to play her.
But, apart from her, the film suffers from a whole series of deplorable miscastings and whoever was responsible for the casting can surely not have read the novel.
