  Jacob Abbott - LoveToKnow 1911
JACOB ABBOTT (1803-1879), American writer of books for the young, was born at Hallowell, Maine, on the 14th of November 1803.
In them Abbott did for one or two generations of young American readers a service not unlike that performed earlier, in England and America, by the authors of Evenings at Home, Sandford and Merton, and the Parent's Assistant.
His sons, Benjamin Vaughan Abbott (1830-1890), Austin Abbott (1831-1896), both eminent lawyers, Lyman Abbott, and Edward Abbott (1841-1908), a clergyman, were also well-known authors.

In his rendering of the Emma Abbott, the sheer size of both canvas and ship seems to suggest the bounteous nature of nineteenth-century munificence to the "deserving poor." No record has been located regarding the circumstances of his commission to paint this ship's portrait.
Research has failed to discover whether the commission to paint the Emma Abbott was given by the guild itself or privately by another interested party.

At age thirteen Abbott started teaching the guitar and traveling on the road.
Thanks to Adelina Patti, the vocalist made her operatic debut at Covent Garden in 1876 as Marie in "La Fille du Regiment." Abbott made her U.S. debut in 1877 at New York's Academy of Music and formed her own touring company in 1878.
