  Artist Page - Emma Kirkby
Emma took part in the early Decca Florilegium recordings with both the Consort of Musicke and the Academy of Ancient Music, at a time when most college-trained sopranos were not seeking a sound appropriate for early music instruments.
Emma feels privileged to have been able to build long term relationships with chamber groups and orchestras, in particular London Baroque, the Freiburger Barockorchester, L’Orfeo (of Linz) and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and now with some of the younger groups — the Palladian Ensemble and Florilegium.
In 1999 Emma was voted Artist of the Year by Classic FM Radio listeners, and in November 2000 she received the Order of the British Empire.

How typical of Emma Kirkby that, in what must be the autumn of a long and distinguished career, she should still be seeking out new repertoire to perform and record.
It’s a work that lies well for the now slighter darkened timbre of Kirkby’s voice, and even admirers may be surprised by the strength of her chest notes.
But here, as throughout the recital, we are given nothing less than a consummate demonstration of the art of Emma Kirkby: perfect intonation and sense of line, impeccable phrasing and diction, an unrivalled ability to nuance and color a phrase or even a word.

Emma Kirkby's first album of seldom-performed Handel arias and overtures is brilliantly put together and executed.
This has to be some of Handel's most difficult and virtuosic music--and Roy Goodman certainly doesn't pull any punches with tempos, particularly in the aria from "Almira," which is taken so fast that even Kirkby, with her legendary vocal agility, has to work to keep up.

ArkivMusic | Byrd: Consort Songs / Emma Kirkby, Fretwork
Emma Kirkby's clear, unadorned vocal quality and needle-sharp intonation, combined with scrupulous attention to tasteful ornamentation and interpretation based on intuitive sense as well as musicological evidence has gained her respect as well as admiration for her distinctive, often virtuoso renditions, from early songs to Baroque oratorio and opera.
While these are essentially songs--there are several purely instrumental selections as well--the balance tends to give a bit too much weight to the viols, which results in an unduly thick-textured and less-than-ideal forward instrumental presence.
Nevertheless, Kirkby is a formidable interpreter--commanding, facile, graceful--and it's interesting to hear her darker, richer vocal quality in some songs alongside her trademark unaffected, young-girlish sound elsewhere.

Soprano Emma Kirkby and the English viol consort Fretwork drew audiences from around the state to the cozy setting of First Presbyterian Church last Friday.
First Presbyterian was the right sort of venue not just to appreciate the lightness of Kirkby's voice but for the power her performance gained from her individual contact with members of the audience.
Because so many of the songs left us at the precipice of death, there was perhaps an unfortunate sameness to the wide-eyed foreboding that returned to her face at songs' ends, making her appear like a tender, pious supplicant from a pre-Raphaelite painting.

Soloists Emma Kirkby and James Bowman, leading lights of the 1980s Baroque revival, have always evoked polarized reactions: traditional opera buff types generally detest them (they should try version with Margaret Marshall and Lucia Valentini-Terrani), while early- music lovers find their voices ideal for this repertory.
Kirkby's uniquely pure, clear, and flexible voice suits this music very well indeed; Bowman's voice is more controversial, and he does show some discomfort on the highest notes, but he's an expressive musician; both singers have a fine sense of line and impeccable tuning--Pergolesi's many dramatic suspensions are especially effective.
