 Shakethrus: 2004 - Shaking Through.net: Music: Reviews
Or, as Emma Pollock sings on heady opener "I Fought The Angels:" "Everybody knows that I only have myself to blame." Fortunately, other than the minor quibble that there's not as many immediately bracing hooks as on past efforts, Universal Audio has very little to apologize for.
Oddly enough, Pollock gets saddled with the most irresistibly peppy, vacuous track, "Everybody Come Down." Universal Audio finds the Delgados working out a straightforward guitar-bass-drums pop-rock jones, and handily proving bigger doesn't exclusively mean better.
The vocal are brought to the fore with no storm of symphonic bombast running interference.

 Review : Delgados - Hate
The great strength of The Delgados consists of the perfect female and male vocals (Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward) that sing collectively and singularly in such an entrancing way that you don't want the music to stop.
I really like the feeling you get when Pollock's vocals are in mono.
This theme of switching between the different recording methods is rather bewitching in a way because, depending on how the song is being recorded, you are given different ways to view Pollock's vocals.

THE BRAIN - ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET
As the first time the band had written music together without the benefit of Alun Woodward or Emma Pollock's lyrics, it, too, was a brutal experience.
From "The Light Before We Land," Pollock is in rare form lyrically and vocally, as the music swells and builds around her, almost engulfing her.
Once again, the album opens with a raucous thud, "Indescretion #243," where the band firmly grabs your attention from wherever it is with distorted guitars, loud drums, and vocals from singer/guitarist Craig B as fiery as his Scottish red hair.

The Delgados: Domestiques - PopMatters Music Review
For some, especially fans of their later material, this might be territory you won't want to tread again, but if that's true it's a shame, as the dual vocals of Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward have rarely sounded as lively and significant as on this.
Opener "Under the Canvas Under Wraps" explodes with the aforementioned enthusiasm, with Woodward's vocals muzzled in a fuzzy feedback and complimenting Pollock's alluring vocal turn with force (while also predating the fuzz box vocals of people like Jules Casablancas).
Stripped free of much of the experimentation that would come with time, the songs on Domestiques breathe a freshness, both lyrically and musically, that sometimes escapes their later work.

 The Delgados: Domestiques: Pitchfork Review
The band wasn't just promoting the label that their core songwriting duo, Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward, started in the early 90s; they were also giving props to the then-nascent Scottish scene, which included Chemikal signees Arab Strap, Bis, and Mogwai, and which peaked during the latter part of that decade.
But it wasn't always this way: Domestiques is undeniably Pollock's album.
Despite the presence of Pollack and Woodward's familiar vocals, the approach and the sound are completely different: Instead of the well-polished cacophony of their last two albums, Domestiques has a much rawer, looser sound, almost punk in the songs' straightforward structures and simple energy.

Singer/guitarist Emma Pollock completed the lineup, and after founding Chemikal Underground the quartet issued its debut effort "Monica Webster" in February 1995, earning "Single of the Week" honors in Melody Maker.
After issuing the Lazarwalker EP on the Radar imprint, the Delgados returned to Chemikal Underground for the 1996 release of the single "Cinecentre." Two more singles, "Under Canvas Under Wraps" and "Sucrose," as well as a U.K. tour in support of Elastica, preceded the October bow of their first full-length effort, Domestiques.
The album's near-unanimous critical acclaim was echoed by the BBC's influential John Peel, who christened the Delgados "the best in Britain." Named "Single of the Week" by both Melody Maker and the NME, the remarkable "Everything Goes Around the Water" heralded the release of the band's sophomore album, 1998's Peloton.
