Alexis Emmanuel Chabrier - LoveToKnow 1911
ALEXIS EMMANUEL CHABRIER (1841-1894), French composer, was born at Ambert, Pay de Dome, on the 18th of January 1841.
Chabrier was also the author of a set of piano pieces entitled Pieces pittoresques, Valses romantiques, for two pianos, a fantasia for horn and piano, andc.
His great admiration for Wagner asserted itself in Gwendoline, a work which, in spite of inequalities due to want of experience, is animated by a high artistic ideal, is poetically conceived, and shows considerable harmonic originality, besides a thorough mastery over the treatment of the orchestra.

Emmanuel Chabrier's España is somewhat overexposed, but to listen to it with more than half an ear is to be astounded all over again at its prancing, crazy, cheeky energy and provocative wit.
Chabrier's other top of the pops is the Joyeuse Marche, an even more life-drunk piece, which sends its marchers off on a wonderfully erratic course, egged on by impulsive cymbals and suddenly roaring brass.
Chabrier was present, though barely aware of what was going on, and from time to time was heard to murmur praise for the composer of the piece; at the end of the performance, he was bewildered to find himself the object of applause.

 Chabrier: Dix pièces pittoresques
Chabrier was a sensitive soul, prone to weep on hearing a single chord of Wagner, yet he cultivated a gaiety and sense of joy that is clearly heard in his music.
As one biographer wrote: “With Chabrier, burlesque went hand in hand with the sentimental; the picturesque was allied to the emotional.” Chabrier’s passion for painting was unmatched by any other composer, and he was friends with important artists of the day, including Manet, Monet, Sisley, Cézanne and Renoir.
The ten contrasting and evocative Pièces pittoresques form the centrepiece of this recording, and were described by Poulenc as being “as important for French music as the preludes of Debussy”.

Although considered a child prodigy as both a pianist and a composer — his first compositions appeared in 1849, when he was eight — Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) dutifully studied law and worked full time in the French Ministry of the Interior for almost 20 years.
Wagner was a major influence on Chabrier, as he was on much French music of the time.
Chabrier’s own character, however, is quite apparent in his works, and finds expression in sharp contrasts of harmonies, rhythms, and textures.

This music links our era with that of Couperin and Rameau." Indeed, Chabrier's music was quite extraordinary for its time and was a vital link in French romanticism and modernism as seen by Chabrier's influence of a generation of admiring French composers (in spite of his small output).
Some of Chabrier's works were even heralded as forerunners of modernism - such as the piece Sous-bois (track 6).
