  Emmanuel Lubezki
And he will be much more Lubezki afraid to question those principles, when he shall think them, as most men do, the standards set up by God in his mind, to be the rule Emmanuel and touchstone of all other opinions.
When this is done, I shall be ready to embrace such welcome and Lubezki useful propositions; and till then I may with Lubezki modesty doubt; since I fear universal consent, which is the only one produced, will scarcely prove a sufficient mark to direct my choice, and assure me of any innate principles.
Had Emmanuel lubezki those who would persuade us that there are innate principles not taken them together in gross, but considered separately the Emmanuel parts out of which those propositions are made, Lubezki they would not, perhaps, have been so forward to believe they were innate.

Lubezki immediately understood Burton's vision for the film--one in which lighting, color and camera angles set the tone for the fog-shrouded 18th century town in upstate New York.
Lubezki and Burton tested the fabric in the costumes, the makeup and the blood to see how they would photograph.
Perhaps the most difficult challenge for Burton and Lubezki came in the final chase, when the two heroes, Johnny Depp's Ichabod Crane and Christina Ricci's Katrina Van Tassel, are escaping the vicious headless horseman.

Although the story is basically linear in form, Lubezki says that the importance of flashbacks and flash-forwards was essential to the telling of Ali's story.
While Lubezki chose to shoot Super 35mm and used the standard Primo lens set, he utilized a number of different camera systems, including Panavision's Platinum, Millennium and XL models to capture the action.
Lubezki maintains that the light had to remain "tremendously bright and contrasty" and to do just that he used hard top lights, "We let that hot light fall off and we slightly overexposed to get the look we were after.

Cuaron was at the director's helm, Del Toro wrote the script, monitored the special effects and fixed the makeup while Lubezki did what he could with lighting and cinematography on a budget that wouldn't pay for a day of shooting on a Hollywood movie.
Though Lubezki's first big break came in 1993 with another Mexican director, Alfonso Arau, in "Like Water for Chocolate," his work on "A Little Princess" garnered him the most attention.
And like Cuaron, Lubezki says he is still trying to stretch as an artist."I am just learning constantly," he says from London, where he is filming "Sleepy Hollow" with Tim Burton.

Here was the challenge director Alfonso Cuarón posed to his longtime cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, when the two were filming "Children of Men": Cuarón wanted to cover 12 script pages in one continuous take from inside a compact Fiat Multipla stuffed with five passengers trying to flee terrorist assailants on motorcycles.
And so the soap opera of the Fiat unfolded on a road under cloudy skies, which meant the exteriors were five times brighter than the inside of the darkened car, making it difficult to photograph both without over-or- underexposing the shots.
Lubezki, his focus puller and a dolly grip sat above the actors in an enclosed translucent loft.

Director Tim Burton, along with director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki, production designer Rick Heinrichs and costume designer Colleen Atwood, chose a style for the film that Burton describes as reminiscent of the horror films of the 50's and 60's.
When stage 'A' was revamped into a snowy battlefield, the birds flew next door to stage 'B' where designers had created a colorful cherry orchard for the spring dream sequences.
"The biggest challenge," according to Lubezki "was creating a false sense of sky." To achieve this, Lubezki pre-rigged the stages with hundreds of space lights (strung from the ceiling) that could be individually controlled by a dimmer board.
