Emmanuel Pahud's recording captures the essence of these beatuiful French pieces and reflects it on his playing.
Pahud perhaps errs in beginning his disc with by far its strongest piece, Poulenc's joyously melodic 'Flute Sonata', serenely playful, influenced by Stravinsky's neo-classicism, but spiritually just as close to Mozart.
Pahud's playing is flexible and expressive throughout, and Le Sage's quiet invention on the piano shouldn't be ignored, but this disc really only sparkles on first hearing.

Emmanuel Pahud, the Swiss-French flutist, who was, like his illustrious predecessor James Galway, the principal of the Berlin Philharmonic, has in recent years taken off on a spectacular solo career.
Pahud is one of the most solid, artistic and refined musicians in the world, and this splendid collection of concerti by Telemann has risen to the very top of my listening pile in very short order.
Soloists in addition to Pahud play beautifully and in the double and triple concertos there is a delightful sense of collegial give and take.

Pahud is a musician in the vein of Jean-Pierre Rampal: he sounds natural no matter what style of music he is playing, and his tone is the finest.
In the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, Pahud is joined by worthy soloists Christine Schornsheim (harpsichord – perhaps a little too reticent) and Rainer Kussmaul (violin, and Artistic Director of the Berlin Baroque Soloists).
It is a mark of Pahud's musicianship that even the monophonic instrumental line sounds richly harmonized and balanced on this recording.

CD Review of Emmanuel Pahud & Jacky Terrasson - Into the Blue on Blue Note @ jazzreview.com
On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Emmanuel Pahud concomitantly was building his own reputation as a virtuoso in a different genre, that of classical music, on EMI Classics.
While it may seem that Terrasson and Pahud required much rehearsal time to achieve the synthesis they sought, such was not entirely the case since Terrasson had studied classical piano for 13 years before being captivated by the freer spirit of jazz.
As for astounding technical ability, Pahud’s and Terrasson’s unison treatment of Paganini’s “Moto Perpetuo,” only a minute and a half long in between fade-in and fade-out, makes the exceedingly difficult seem easy, as does Pahud’s fluttering and even shorter “Vol du Bourdon” (“Flight of the Bumblebee”).

Emmanuel Pahud must certainly be considered one of the preeminent flutists of his generation and this CD does nothing to detract from that accolade.
On these pieces by Khachaturian and Ibert, Pahud is called on to display a vast array of technical flourishes and musical moods, all of which are brought off with an effortless abandon.
In contrast, Ibert's Flute Concerto offers Pahud the opportunity to cavort about amid lush orchestration and revel in the composer's limpid, exotic textures in which melodies engage in a flowing dialogue with the orchestra.
