  Emanuel van Meteren
Emanuel van Meteren (September 6, 1535 - ?) was a historian and Consul for "the Traders of the Low Countries" in London.
He was born in Antwerp, the son of Sir Jacobus van Meteren, financier and publisher of early English versions of the Bible, and Orrilia Ortellius, of the famous Ortellius family of mapmakers, and nephew of the famous cartographer Abraham Ortelius.
To help thwart the plots of the Spanish Ambassador at the Court of Queen Elizabeth, William the Silent enlisted one Willem Janszoon van Hoorn, the captain of the Sea Beggar, to pretend to accept a bribe from the Spanish Ambassador and enter into a conspiracy to surprise the English garrison at Flushing.

 Abraham Ortelius - LoveToKnow 1911
Beginning as a map-engraver (in 1547 he enters the Antwerp gild of St Luke as afsetter van Karten), his early career is that of a business man, and most of his journeys before 1560 are for commercial purposes (such as his yearly visits to the Frankfort fair).
In 1596 he received a presentation from Antwerp city, similar to that afterwards bestowed on Rubens; his death and burial (in St Michael's Abbey church) in 1598 were marked by public mourning.

Emanuel van Meteren (September 6, 1535 - April 11, 1612) was a Flemish historian and Consul for "the Traders of the Low Countries" in London.
Van Meteren made some arrangements with the Secretary of State, Sir Francis Walsingham, who was in charge of security for the embassy.
Van Meteren was successfully in concealing them and effecting their escape.

Meteren's chronicle, in fact, first published in Flemish in 1599, covered nearly forty years of history to 1597 and was an unprecedented work, but was very unfavourable to the Catholics.
Emmanuel Van Meteren (1535-1612) spent a considerable part of his life in London as consul of the Dutch merchants there; he was a cousin of the eminent cartographer Abraham Ortelius, with whom he explored various parts of Britain and Ireland in 1572.
According to NBG, when Meteren sent his manuscript to Germany in order to have it illustrated, it was surreptitiously published first in German (1593), then in Latin (1597).

The first editions of Van Meteren's History were German translations, based on an unauthorized Dutch text of Van Meteren; they were published at Cologne, by Mylius, in 1593, 1596, and 1597.
The portrait is not in Van Someren, or Muller, nor in Holstein.
Van Meteren's work was the first history of the Netherlands to treat the revolt against the Spanish up til the foundation of the Dutch Republic, now for the first time available for an international public.

Dutch historian Emmanuel Van Meteren's book, Historie der Nederlanden wrote that a mutiny took place on Hudson's 1609 voyage, originating in quarrels between Dutch and English sailors.
