Emmerich (Imre) Kalman, one of the greatest composers of operetta, was born in Siofok, Hungary, 1882.
Kalman's years in Vienna were his most productive ones, and he lived there until the Nazi takever of Austria (1938) and subsequent banning of his operettas.
His Viennese operettas are of a high musical quality; moreover, their librettos were carefully chosen, sometimes after years of searching by the composer, to appeal to contemporary taste (as a result the texts normally have to be extensively modified for revival).

 Budapest Spring Festival 2002
Emmerich (Imre) Kálmán (1882–1953) was admitted to the Budapest Academy of Music in 1900, together with Zoltán Kodály, to János Koessler’s composition class.
The praise expressed by his fellow composers, Bartók and Kodály, shows that Emmerich Kálmán was exceptionally talented.
These works quite clearly demonstrate that without his sound classical training, Emmerich Kálmán would not have been able to achieve his later successes in the “light” genre.

Emmerich Kálmán finally moved permanently to Vienna and, with a few exceptions, was pampered by success even more than almost any of his long-established colleagues.
Yet, Emmerich Kálmán, the illustrious "Csardas Cavalier" of the operetta, still remained an onlooker of his own happiness, as reported by his colleague Robert Stolz: "The pessimism and weltschmerz of poor Emmerich were so immense that he simply did not want to see the success of his operetta.
