  The Robert Emmet Society, Emmet County Michigan
The Robert Emmet Society is based in Petoskey, Michigan, the county seat of Emmet County.
Its mission is to create awareness of Irish Patriot Robert Emmet (1778 - 1803), the namesake of Emmet County, which is located in northwestern Michigan, on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The Robert Emmet Society has distributed video copies of a lecture entitled "The Life and Legacy of Robert Emmet" to public and high school libraries in Emmet County, the Emmet County Historical Society and North Central Michigan College (NCMC).

Emmet County remained attached to Mackinaw County for administrative purposes until county government was organized in 1853.
Emmet County is located at the top of the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan, with Lake Michigan to the west, the Straits of Mackinac to the north, Cheboygan County to the east, and Charlevoix County to the south.

 History of Emmet County, Michigan
Section 28 of that Act described the boundaries of Emmet County as that portion of the State lying north of the line between towns 36 and 37 north, and west of the line between ranges 4 and 5 west.
The Act provided that the islands contiguous to the counties of Emmet and Charlevoix, together with so much of range 4 west as was theretofore included in Cheboygan County should be annexed to Emmet County and that the former County of Charlevoix should be a township of Emmet County.
The Emmet County Board of Supervisors promptly informed the state officials that they had already established the county seat at Little Traverse and in 1861 the Act was declared unconstitutional and repealed.

 Place Names of Emmet County, Michigan
Located at the southwest corner of the county in Bear Creek Township.  Jacob Lehmer became the first postmaster of this rural post office on Nov. 23, 1881.  The office operated until Oct. 21, 1897.
He then came to Michigan in 1876 and bought 1300 acres in Emmet County.  He began re-selling the land to settlers.
In 1882 it had a station on a branch of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad.  Josiah R. Laforce became its first postmaster on May 13, 1886, the office was closed on Sept. 29, 1886 and was  restored on May 27, 1887, and operated until June 6, 1957.
