Ray's idol for his talent as well as his persona, Reinhardt was known to sometimes not show up for his performance at all, much like the unpredictable Ray.
Ray's indignant treatment of Hattie (Samantha Morton), a mute New Jersey laundress -- his (and for that matter, Allen's) complete antithesis, with whom he travels to California and with whom he feels comfortable -- is epitomized by his inability to bear his true feelings, for fear of becoming vulnerable and losing his gift.
Ray's utter disregard for Hattie's feelings is evinced in two particular scenes -- one in which he strums his guitar while Hattie changes a flat tire on his car, and another in which he suddenly abandons her one morning, leaving nothing but money on the table.

Penn stars as Emmet Ray, a 1930s jazz guitarist whose impeccable artistry, as is usually the case in Allen's films, is his sole virtue as a human being.
Emmet, of course, is so elaborately self-absorbed that he takes no notice of his colleagues, and perhaps the film's structure as an attempted recovery of Emmet's forgotten biography leaves little room for attending to figures such as those played by LaPaglia and Urbaniak.
When Emmet is not with her—and given the outrageous coarseness with which he speaks to and interprets her, it is inexplicable why she allows the relationship to develop—the activity in which we most often perceive Hattie is the ceaseless, day-long consumption of desserts.

Ray, who flourished briefly in the '30s before fading into obscurity, was considered by jazz aficionados to be second only to the magnificent gypsy guitarist, Django Rineheardt.
Ray, with his severe limitations, must have been a difficult character for Penn to master, but he plays it convincingly and, at times, heart rendingly; he is a man who is struggling, yet unable to express his feelings.
Hattie is a mute halfwit, and because of her silence, Ray is forced to listen to himself.

The hero is Emmet Ray (a terrific performance by Sean Penn), a fictional jazz guitarist from the 1930's, here given mocumentary treatment by Allen, complete with talking heads, speakers knowledgeable about jazz who relate bits of the history, deadpanning as if they were talking about, say, Duke Ellington on a PBS special.
Ray, too, is a kleptomaniac, a pimp, and a drunk whose pleasures are shooting rats in the town dump and watching trains go by.
Ray's emotional availability or lack thereof, is entwined with his artistry in a complicated way and that becomes a central theme of Sweet and Lowdown.

Emmet creaks his back in slight pain, saying “Well, if I was a dead sumo wrestler, where would I be?” He then thinks for a moment, and says to himself with sharp cynicism “I’d be in the kitchen--” Emmet’s words were interrupted by a booming thud throughout the kitchen.
Ray immediately heard this and ran toward the kitchen, and blasted Chow from behind, neither Emmet nor Ray’s aim remained true enough to hold steady, and chow panicked, and retreated through the wall adjacent to the dining room—holding towing Emmet along with him with one hand.

It's the 1930s, and the central figure is jazz musician Emmet Ray (Penn), the second best guitarist in the world who quakes at the thought of his idol, Django Reinhardt.
The film is a comedy of sorts recounting the larger than life story of Emmet, a man whose idea of a good time is to take women down to the dumpster to shoot rats with his gun or to sit by the train tracks to watch the trains pass by.
Emmet, a literal trainspotter a good half century before Irvine Welsh came into the scene, turns out to be quite a character, fancying himself as an 'artiste' whose work seems always to get tangled up with his never-ending lady problems.

Emmet Ray is brought to fascinating life by Sean Penn. This actor's weaselly face is perfect for this sleazy character, who still has a romantic enough soul to envision himself being lowered to the stage seated with his guitar on a huge crescent moon.
Yet for all that Emmet Ray has talent, and Penn portrays him with an affectionate derision, he is still the Woody Allen alter-ego, and his treatment of women is abominable.
Yet for all that she allows Emmet to treat her as a doormat, she ultimately demonstrates the greater strength, and arguably has the last laugh.

Ray is also prey to a maestro's Don Juan tactics with the ladies as well, for through the reels no fewer than three women will share his affections on long-term bases: long-suffering Ellie (Gretchen Mol), absolutely charming Hattie (Samantha Morton) and society sycophant Blanche (Uma Thurman).
