Emmett Littleton Ashford (November 23, 1914 - March 1, 1980), nicknamed "Ash", was the first African American umpire in Major League Baseball, working in the American League from 1966 to 1970.
While some observers believed that his race prevented him from working in the majors earlier than he did, others maintained that his flashy style actually delayed his major league debut due to general disdain for umpires to draw attention to themselves.
Ashford died at age 65 in Venice, Los Angeles.

Ashford used huge gestures-to the disdain of batters who were called out on strikes or tagged out on slides.
Ashford died of a heart attack at the age of 66 on March 1, 1980, in Marina del Ray, CA.

In 1951 he was hired as an umpire by the Class C Southwest International League on recommendation of major league scout Rosey Gilhousen.In 1953 he advanced to Class A and next year he jumped to the Triple A Pacific Coast League.He spent 11 seasons in the PCL,serving as umpire-in-chef in his last 2 years.
Being a ML umpire Ashford brought a new style with him.Umpires had been mostly conservative,faceless figures in the background.Ashford wore flashy jewelry,including flashy cufflinks and emphasized his calls with exagerrated gestures.He was criticized by the purists but liked by the fans.
Ashford conducted umpiring clinics in Europe and Asia as a baseball goodwill ambassador.
