The county was originated by an act of territorial legislation during February of 1879.
The Missouri River is the western boundary of Emmons County.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 3.70% from 18 to 24, 22.30% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 25.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

The county takes its name from the Pottawatomie tribe of Indians, whose reservation at the opening of Kansas Territory for settlement, and for years afterwards embraced a large portion of the lands of the county.
County Clerk Smith, by order of the Board, advertised for bids for the lot and building, to be received on or before January 1, 1883.
October 4, 1859, on a vote on the adoption of the constitution, submitted at the Wyandotte Convention, the vote of this county was ninety-three for; sixty-eight against.

In 1908 The Emmons County Record boasted, "It is doubtful whether there is anther town with the population of 500 that has as many cars as Linton, a total of 14”.
The Emmons County Record, Emmons County's oldest business, was established in May 1884 by Darwin R. Streeter, at the now extinct town of Williamsport.
Because the county seat of Emmons County, Williamsport, was inconveniently located in the northern part of the county a central location was chosen by county voters in November 1896.

Henry H. Emmons was born Feb. 23, 1867, and that was the name he was always known by.

Sid and Deb Nelson and their two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sarah Nelson and Danny and Kim Nelson, are now Hazelton area residents after living on land 60 miles southwest of Chicago that had been in the family for six generations on Nelson Road.
The area's Scandinavian population is mostly in the northern half of the county.
