-The "emocore" style has become broader over the years.
In the beginning, these bands consisted mostly of people who played in hardcore punk bands, got burned out its limited forms, and moved to a guitar-oriented, midtempo rock-based sound with emotional punk vocals (i.e., no posed soulful crooning like pop music).
Also note most emocore bands play Gibson Les Paul guitars, with a few SGs, and use mostly Marshall JCM-800 amps.

Emocore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emocore (abbreviated from "emotional hardcore") was a term that was used most popularly in the 1980s and 1990s to describe a genre of music that was an offshoot of the hardcore music scene.
Emocore performances were intense, often bordering on catharsis, with performers and audience members often driven to the point of tears during shows.
However, fans of the emocore bands of the '80s and '90s have begun to use the term to separate "their" style of "emo" from the more mainstream "emo" of the modern day.

Finch are a young band who have been rising quickly within the emocore ranks, having already landed a recording contract with Drive-Thru Records and the admiration of such underground luminaries as Glassjaw, all with only this, a 4 song EP under their belts.
With a vocal tone that resides somewhere in between that of Far's Jonah Matranga and Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo, band frontman Nate's emphatic voice careens through full bodied heartfelt croons that are contrasted with a spiked shadow of aggressive from the gut screams, adding a fierce recklessness to compliment the diligently emotional oral performance.
The guitar work is also well versed within the general emocore stylings, utilizing crisp distortion and animated riffs with a slightly darker edge to shift gears, while a consistent wave of driving low end steadies them and funnels their energy into cleverly constructed, progressive buildups.

Because of Bazan's searching intensity, Pedro's music is often labeled emocore, a genre based on open-wound honesty and unabashed emotion.
Emocore is doubtlessly a salutary thing: One of the scene's most prominent bands is Rainer Maria, and it's hard not to be heartened by a subculture that lionizes a group named after Austrian lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
Nevertheless, the term "emo" ghettoizes all the radically different artists who fall under its umbrella, obscuring the fact that Bazan is mining familiar and very accessible guitar pop territory.

The History of Rock Music - The Nineties
First and foremost, there was "emocore", the style invented in the late 1980s by Rites Of Spring and the Washington contingent.
Their "emotional" hardcore alternated quiet and furious musical parts, admitted moody arrangements, indulged in time changes and mid-tempo rhythms, leveraged emotional singing that could whisper as well as shout within the same song, and was not limited to the short/fast format of hardcore.
New Jersey's Rye Coalition fused emocore and hard-rock, Fugazi and AC/DC, starting with Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet (1997).
