Aeroelastic modelling of aircraft empennage buffet
The challenges associated with the empennage buffet problem vary from prediction of the nonlinear separated vortical flows about complex configurations to the coupled interaction between the flow and the dynamic response of the tail structure.
The multidisciplinary problem of tail buffeting is solved accurately in time using an unsteady vortex model for prediction of aerodynamic loads and coupled aeroelastic equations for the bending and torsional deflections of the tail which are resolved using the Galerkin method.
A dynamic aeroelastic analysis of empennage buffet is performed for a generic delta-wing, twin vertical-tail configuration at high angles of attack.

  U.S. Patent: 5102067 - Integrated helicopter empennage structure - April 7, 1992
The integrated empennage structure comprises a shroud integral with the tail boom, a shroud-fin integration shelf, an aft shroud closure, a vertical stabilizer, and a horizontal stabilizer intersecting the vertical stabilizer.
The empennage structure 20 includes a shroud 22 integral with the tail boom 16, a shroud-fin integration shelf 24, an aft shroud closure 26, a vertical fin or stabilizer 28, and a horizontal fin or stabilizer 30 intersecting the vertical stabilizer 28.
The integrated empennage structure 20 further comprises an aerodynamically configured and orientated horizontal stabilizer 30 that is optimized, in relation to a predetermined configuration and orientation of the vertical stabilizer 28, to provide negative vertical forces for dynamic pitch stability of the helicopter 10 in the forward flight regimes.

Interactions between Rotor and Horizontal Stabilizer
Also, the empennage may be wholly or partially immersed inside the high total pressure of the rotor wake.
Mello and Rand (Ref. 13) used a similar model, and showed that the predicted unsteady loads on the empennage were very sensitive to the rotor wake geometry.
In addition to the high rotor downwash at the empennage, there are several possible constituent sources of unsteady loading that may be produced on a lifting surface located near a rotor or its wake.

 The Story of Homebuilt
Empennage was named after the tail structure of an airplane.
She was trained to protect me, Empennage, and our home, but as soon as I let her know that you're a friend, she would love you to death.
She didn't do as many tricks as Empennage (imagine a 95 pound Rottweiler doing a snap roll too close to a china closet!), but she was very well trained in the standard obedience skills, off leash control, and protection.

Empennage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Empennage" and "tail" and "tail assembly" may be interchangeably used.
Its main purpose is to give stability to the aircraft and control the flight dynamics: pitch, roll and yaw.
On an airliner this would be everything behind the rear pressure bulkhead.

The Sailplane Class @ Penn State
There are currently four separate teams working on an individual component of the aircraft; the fuselage, wings, empennage (horizontal and vertical tails), and control system.
The empennage group was formed to design an effective horizontal tail (HT), vertical tail (VT), and tailboom connection to ensure structural stability and dynamic control of the aircraft.
Once this is done and the designs for the wings, empennage, and fuselage progress, the team can begin determining what kind of control system will work best for the glider.

The bonus for me, and it was a HUGE bonus, was that at Thursday noon we bundled up my empennage and all five of us went to work on Peter's quick-build.
He is driven by a great result, so tends to want to do things like riveting the rudder trailing edge himself, etc. For many builders, this is perfect, for others, you'll want to step in and insist that you get to take some risk.
I should mention that my empennage is beautifully done and that there is no single skill that I did not experience myself during its building.

In addition to the new empennage, Prototype No. 1 flew its "full up" configuration, with lowered exhaust doors, alternate main rotor pylon, main rotor hub fairing and the Comanche fire control radar aerodummy.
The new Comanche empennage design consists of vertical and horizontal stabilizers and new vertical endplates on the horizontal structure.
The new tail structure, which was mounted atop the RAH-66 FANTAIL shrouded tail rotor earlier this month, is a reconfigurable unit that permits adjustments of tail components to validate and optimize a final tail design for production.

Rear Fuselage and Empennage Flow Investigation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Furthermore, research effort with respect to an improved understanding of the flow physics around fuselage / tail combinations remained limited, as investigations naturally concentrated on the wing and its interference with the fuselage.
This has to be seen in the light of the fact that performance guarantees for future aircraft have to be granted earlier and with higher accuracy as compared to former developments.
In order to cope with the current aeronautics industrial needs which for sure are different from what was relevant in the past, a new integrative approach is proposed, closing the gap between the current classical empennage design and the possible future unconventional empennage design.

These are a few pictures detailing the construction of the empennage section consisting of the horizontal and vertical stabilizer, rudder, elevators and electric trim tab.
The empennage is the normal place to start construction as it is a small investment that gets you started.
It exposes the builder to a variety of construction techniques and most pieces are relatively inexpensive, so the learning curve isn't to expensive should parts be destroyed.

Stork Fokker AESP - Cessna Citation empennage
But after being invited to bid on production of the empennage for the medium-size Sovereign model in the Citation business-jet range Stork Fokker has become a partner in the programme.
Stork Fokker supported Cessna in designing the empennage (or complete tail unit), made the tooling and now manufactures the part which, after completion, is shipped to Cessna's facilities in Wichita-Kansas and mounted on to the aircraft at the final-assembly line.
Outsourcing of the empennage has allowed Cessna to re-allocate internal resources, while the partnership with Stork Fokker has increased capacity that is not limited to the Sovereign model.

The full-scale business jet empennage was tested in NASA Ames Research Center's 40- by 80-ft wind tunnel to obtain aeroperformance data for the clean (no-ice baseline) and ice-contaminated tail.
The ice contamination consisted of nine variations of artificial ice shapes that included several LEWICE ice shapes, spoilers, sandpaper roughness, and a casting developed in an Icing Research Tunnel test.
The full-scale data base is being analyzed and will be reported in fiscal year 2001 with comparisons to results from a previous test of a 25-percent-scale business jet empennage model.
