In accordance with an edict from Emperor Wu, Ho Kuang- the marquis of Po lu -was appointed commander in chief (ta ssu ma) and generalissimo and functioned as an imperial regent.
Emperor Hsüan, however, insisted that "in all matters of government, Ho Kuang should still be consulted and his advice sought." Thus, the charge "to be consulted and advise (kampaku in Japanese) " came to be used as a title.

He is succeeded by his son of 3, who is crowned German king Christmas Day at Aix-la-Chapelle by Germans unaware of the emperor's death and will reign until 1002 as Otto III with his mother Theophano exercising power until 991 and his grandmother Adelheid and Archbishop Willigis of Mainz taking over until 996.
He marries the emperor's sister Anna, returns in triumph to Kiev, and begins a general conversion of Russians to Eastern Orthodoxy (see 1054).

Buddhism was adopted by Emperor Shomu as the religion of the imperial court, although worship of the national gods, led by Amaterasu Omikami from whom the ruling dynasty claimed descent, as a customary rite was not disavowed.
When her successor, Emperor Konin, died in 781, the council of ministers refused to allow a woman to take the throne, thereby creating a precedent which was followed consistently in later times, except for two unimportant instances after 1600, when the throne was powerless.

 Hakusan Shrine, Uji, Kyoto, Japan
This shrine is said to have been constructed in prayer for the remedy of the smallpox epidemic which spread in the late 8th century.
The hall of worship, built in 1277, is a designated important cultural property and said to be the remains of imperial villa Uji Rikyu.
It was later made the guardian shrine for the Konjiki-in, a temple said to have been built by the Empress Kanshi (1036-1127), consort of the Emperor Goreizei (1025-1068) and daughter of Fujiwara no Yorimichi (992-1074).
