Emperor Shirakawa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Emperor Shirakawa (白河天皇 Shirakawa Tennō) (July 7, 1053 – July 24, 1129) was the 72nd imperial ruler of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.
He was the first emperor to ostensibly retire to a monastery, but in fact continue to exert considerable influence over his successor.
Note: there's also a theory that Shirakawa was the actual father of Emperor Sutoku, officially the son of Emperor Toba, Shirakawa's grandson.

Sessho and Kampaku - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
In Japan, the Sesshō (摂政) was a title given to a regent who was named to assist an emperor when the emperor was still a child, before the coming of age, or female.
Kojiki reported that Emperor Ōjin was assisted by his mother the empress consort Jingū, but it is doubtful if it is a historical fact.

 The Emperor Horikawa Diary (1977)
The author, Fujiwara no Nagako, was a member of a minor branch of the powerful Fujiwara family, and was probably born in 1079, the same year as the future Emperor Horikawa, whose palace attendant she would become around 1101, and whom she would serve until his death in 1107 under the name Lady Sanuke.
Although forced to attend the child Emperor, she frequently loses herself in fantasies invoked by the falling snow, or the painted screens.
It is not that Nagako lacks passion, it just that so much in her work deals with Horikawa that it is quite impossible to picture the shadowy figure of the author, who gets lost in her lamentations for the Emperor.

Emperor Horikawa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emperor Horikawa (堀河天皇 Horikawa Tennō) (August 8, 1079 – August 9, 1107) was the 73rd imperial ruler of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.
His reign (1087-1107) was overshadowed by the cloistered rule of former emperor Emperor Shirakawa.
Horikawa filled his reign with scholarship, tanka, and music.

 Informat.io on Emperor Go Horikawa
In 1221, because of the Jōkyū Incident, an unsuccessful attempt by Emperor Go-Toba to seize real power, the Kamakura shogunate completely excluded those of the imperial family descended from Emperor Go-Toba from the Chrysanthenum throne, thus forcing Emperor Chūkyō to abdicate.
After the Genpei War, he, the grandson of the late Emperor Takakura, who was also a nephew of the then exiled Retired Emperor Go-Toba, and Chūkyō's first cousin, was enthroned as Go-Horikawa.
As Go-Horikawa was only 9 years old at this time, his father Imperial Prince Morisada acted as cloistered emperor under the name Go-Takakura-in.

Other Imperial Family Members Involved in Court Politics
The son of Shirakawa and the Empress Kenshi, Horikawa ruled from 1086-1107.
Like his father, Horikawa exercised considerable power at court (Hurst, 1976, p 147), but his death at the age of twenty-nine shortened his rule, and it is reasonable to assume that during the first several years of his reign Horikawa was little more than a figurehead.
Nijô's relationship with his father was rather fractious after he took the throne, especially since his father wanted to exercise as much influence as possible from his position as the head of the imperial family.

 Fujiwara no Nagako
So although Horikawa had the name of emperor, he had little influence and is known in history chiefly for his fondness for poetry and music.
Nagako remained in Toba's service until 1119, when she was dismissed; a contemporary male diarist noted a rumor that she was possessed by the spirit of Horikawa, but she may merely have been involved in one of the on-going palace intrigues.
Everyone remembered the late Emperor with affection, but if I were to show this to someone who did not think well of me, the contents might create a furor if noised abroad, and that would be unfortunate.

When Nagako was 22 she began to serve as an attendant to Emperor Horikawa, who is known chiefly for his fondness for poetry and music, not for ruling the country.
In court, Nagako was called Sanuki no Suke, and her memoir of Horikawa, who died young, is thus called Sanuki no Suke Nikki.
A first book describes her caring for Horikawa in the month before his death, and a second book begins with her recall to court three months later, to serve Horikawa's five year old son, Emperor Toba.
