Emperor of the North Pole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emperor of the North Pole is a 1973 movie starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and Keith Carradine.
The title is a reference to a joke among hobos during the Great Depression that the world's best hobo was "Emperor of the North Pole," a way of poking fun at their own desperate situation since somebody ruling over the North Pole would be ruling over a wasteland.

 Emperor of the North B00000JBJK
Emperor of the North, a vivid Depression-era drama, opens with a friendly, down-home song that doesn't prepare the audience for what follows: The brutal killing of a train-hopping bum at the hands of a cruel conductor named Shack (Ernest Borgnine, Marty, The Poseidon Adventure).
The swagger gets a little overblown at times, but more often Emperor of the North has a gritty realism, peppered with flashes of sardonic humor and surprising compassion.
Aldrich has a gift for a loose yet always watchable story, filled with engaging bit parts and offbeat incidents that flesh out the world and make the main storyline all the more compelling.

The Emperor of the North Pole merely adds to such sentiment.
Well written, acted, shot, with an illumination of the hopes and actions of desperation, in a time when nothing was safe, and home was truly where you hung your hat.
Big ups to Lee Marvin here, and Borgnine, two old dogs who thrash their way through this, to a terrific climax on the end of the No. 19.

Emperor of the North Pole Review (1973)
You know that old movie cliché that occurs whenever a couple of characters, or maybe more, are travelling across America without transport, then they will eventually end up climbing aboard a slow moving, empty railway carriage and that will take them part of their journey?
Well, Emperor of the North Pole, scripted by Christopher Knopf, is a whole movie built around a scene such as that.
But despite the beginning making it clear men like him were desperate for employment and money, the act of cheating the railwaymen has become A No.1's whole life, and winning the title Emperor of the North Pole is, finally, meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

(Originally titled Emperor of the North Pole, a bit of hobo lingo.) --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the DVD edition.
"Emperor of the North" has a gritty, earthy feel to the entire film, and you can sense that Aldrich was eager to depict a legendary show down between two fiercely opposed individuals, that were perhaps forgotten amongst the many tales of woe and hardship told during the Depression years.
Chances are you are already a fan of some of his past work including "The Dirty Dozen", "The Flight Of The Phoenix", "The Longest Yard" or "Twilights Last Gleaming".
