  Empfindsamer Stil

The harpsichord was the most popular instrument, and many suites were written for it.
In northern Germany the preclassical style was called empfindsamer Stil (German, “sensitive style”).
It encompassed a wider range of contrasting emotions than the style galant, which tended to be merely elegant or pleasant.

 C.P.E. Bach (1714-1788)
The composer was a leader in the empfindsamer Stil, the main "singing" style associated with Classical music.
An elegant style, this was characterized by an emphasis on subtleties and on the expression of numerous sentiments within one movement of a composition.
Bach was the most important composer to develop the sensitive empfindsamer Stil, but "like his father before him, Emanuel died still attached to a style that had fallen from favor" (Downs 361).

 Bach Carl Phillipp
Bach, a widely cultured man who associated with writers and philosophers at least as much as with musicians, was one of the chief representatives of the
empfindsamer Stil (“expressive style”), which emphasised frequent contrasts in emotion and contributed many technical features to the emerging Classical style.
Empfindsamer composers like Bach tried to emulate the emotional range and sudden contrasts of an actor’s speech, which might go off at a tangent or make little asides from the main subject; which might be interrupted; and which could be violent, humorous, or intensely inward in expression, often in quick succession.

Haydn Piano Sonata in B-flat Major HXVI:2
Easily one of the best sonatas among the earliest group, this work can be used as a prime example of two styles in vogue during the mid-eighteenth century: the style galante, and the Empfindsamer stil.
Another later-Haydn technique encountered clearly in this movement is a deliberate weakening of the key prior to its firm establishment at an important thematic/harmonic juncture -- such as the arrival of 2S (at measure 48) being preceded by a 2T which a chromatic feint leading to an expanded IV6.
Movements such as this, with a highly ornamented melodic line unfolding gradually over a pulsating bass, represent the Empfindsamer stil that we tend to associate with composers such as C.P.E. Bach.

This large German clavichord is of the later, unfretted type.
With each key controlling only one unison pair of strings, the greatest possible variety of articulation is possible, making this ideal for music in the empfindsamer stil (“sensitive”) style of the mid- and later eighteenth century.
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, as well as the eminent English music historian Dr. Charles Burney were lavish in their praise of the clavichord’s great utility in developing fine touch and articulation, not only on the clavichord itself but on the harpsichord as well.

A progressive musician whose creations were often thought "bizarre" by his contemporaries, the second, and most talented, son of J. Bach exemplified his age's empfindsamer Stil (expressive style) by placing a premium on the individualistic and improvisatory in music.
You can hear how C. Bach's most capricious works must have bewildered and even irritated his less-adventurous contemporaries, as his sudden harmonic shifts and dramatic melodies veer from galant in one measure to "grotesque" in the next.

But in other respects he broke with his father, as sons often do, becoming a modernist fond of disrupting traditional norms.
He embraced the aesthetic of the empfindsamer Stil or sensible style — "sensible" in this case meaning perceptible to the mind — which sought to convey emotion as directly as possible to the mind of the listener through such compositional devices as sudden interruptions, interjections, and excursions to remote keys.
John Heiss, flutist, composer, and long-time faculty member of New England Conservatory, describes studying in New York City in the early 1960’s, when the twelve-tone system was enjoying its heyday in academe, and when "harsh and aggressive" was the way to go.

 Roman Turovsky.
He began composing seriously in the early nineties, at the same time embarking on a career of an artist-painter.
Limiting his focus to the high Baroque style, he eventually widened his expressive arsenal to include the post-Baroque Empfindsamer Stil, authoring more than 600 compositions that are firmly rooted in the high Baroque tradition but, as Roman says, are "infused with a healthy dose of Empfindsamkeit".
In 1996 he made a fateful decision to circulate his works anonymously under a German transliteration of his paternal grandmother's name, effectively creating an 18th century family of lutenist-composers named Sautscheck.

The Haydn sonata, which reveals the influence of C.P.E. Bach's Empfindsamer Stil ("emotional style"), uses pregnant pauses, spiky intervals and the minor mode to convey emotional intensity.
It has built into it a kind of affective language which, to today's listener, exposed over a lifetime to nineteenth and twentieth century Romanticism, seems rather quaint and quirky.

Sturm und Drang was a part of a preceding, and largely overlapping, movement in music known by its German name, the empfindsamer Stil.
