 MN Awards - Sea Gallentry
With the Order of the British Empire came the Empire Gallantry Medal, the then highest award for civilian acts of gallantry.
Conspicuous Gallantry Medal - Merchant Navy Personnel became eligible by an Order in Council dated 17 September 1942.
On the military front the Victoria Cross was instituted in 1856, the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal in 1855 and 1874, the Distinguished Service Order in 1886, the Distinguished Service Cross in 1901, the Distinguished Service Medal in 1914.

 Gallantry Awards for the Merchant Navy
The Empire Gallantry Medal was revoked by Royal Warrant in favour of the George Cross on 24 September 1940.
During the Second World War, the Victoria Cross, George Cross, Empire Gallantry Medal, Albert Medal, and Sea Gallantry Medal were awarded posthumously because such was allowed by their Royal Warrants.
These days official gallantry awards are classified as being in four levels that relate to the estimated risk of loss of life to the recipient, in attempting their gallant act(s): I being the highest level, and IV the lowest, and the following table adheres to this system.

At the time of its inception, 108 living recipients of the Empire Gallantry Medal (EGM) and the next-of-kin of 4 further recipients were eligible to exchange their EGMs for GCs.
The silver cross, bearing an image of St George slaying the dragon and the words " FOR GALLANTRY ", was designed by Percy Metcalfe and is struck at the Royal Mint.
In 1971 surviving holders of the Albert Medal (65) and the Edward Medal (68) were also eligible to exchange their decoration for the George Cross.

In 1928 this medal was replaced by the British Empire Medal for both gallantry and meritorious service but was re-instated in 1977.
Today this medal is awarded to senior petty officers of the Royal Navy and warrant officers and NCOs of the Royal Marines who already hold a long service medal and have completed 27 years service with three good conduct badges.
