Since Japan was essentially closed to the rest of the world, the gold/silver ratio varied dramatically from the rest of the world.
Since the gold-silver ration was much lower in Japan (1-5 or 1-10) than in the rest of the world (1-15), gold was drained from Japan, and foreign silver coins imported into Japan, which then allowed counterstamped coins to circulate.
Japan occupied the territories of Brunei, Burma, Hong Kong, Malaya, Netherlands Indies, North Borneo, Philippines and Sarawak.

Empire of Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The country had been called the Empire of Japan since the feudal anti-shogunate domains, Satsuma and Chōshū, formed the base of their new government in the Meiji Restoration, with the intention of making it an empire.
Although it was in the 1889 Constitution of the Empire of Japan that the title Empire of Japan was officially used for the first time, it was not until 1936 that the proper official title of the country was legalized.
Japan is censured by the League of Nations (December 7).

Empire by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri s. 3.4
In the second model, the info-industrial model, typified by japan and Germany, industrial employment declines more slowly than it does in the first model, and, more important, the process of informatisation is closely integrated into and serves to reinforce the strength of existing industrial production.
Such geographical shifts and displacements might lead some to believe that there is a new global organisation of economic stages whereby the dominant countries are informational service economies, their first subordinates are industrial economies, and those further subordinated are agricultural.
In Europe the great common lands created with the break-up of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity were eventually transferred to private hands in the course of capitalist primitive accumulation.

Intent on explaining Japan’s plunge into the abyss of militarism during the 1930s, early postwar scholars devoted significant portions of their studies to highlighting the role of Japan’s right-wing leadership in the politics of the day.

It was Japan's attack in 1931 at Mukden and the subsequent creation of Manchukuo (the State of Manchuria, Japan's puppet state) that alienated Japan from the League of Nations and eventually led to a full-scale war against China in July 1937.
A rapid recovery of postwar Japan as an American bastion of capitalism was considered a windfall amid the rise of communism in Asia.
Thus Japan's plan for surrender and beyond, both politically and militarily in the Eurasian context, was made assuming a Soviet attack beginning in Manchuria and assessing its impact on the United States.

Amazon.com: Yen: Japan's New Financial Empire and Its Threat to America: Books: Daniel Burstein
He recounts the familiar facts of Japan's economic miracle, then expresses his grave concerns about Japanese purchases of U.S. government bonds, real estate in Manhattan and Hawaii and investments in factories on U.S. soil.
He argues that Japan as the world's major creditor nation is gaining power over the U.S., now the world's largest debtor nation.
To overcome the Japanese "threat," Burstein recommends the standard litany of interventionist nostrums including the adoption of a Federal industrial policy, a separate gasoline tax to reduce the budget deficit, and trade and market reciprocity arrangements with the Japanese.
