		Tékumel: Empire of the Petal Throne is a fantasy world created by Professor Muhammad Abd-el-Rahman Barker over the course of several decades.
		In this imaginary world, huge empires with medieval levels of technology vie for control using magic, large standing armies, and ancient technological devices.
		It brought a level of detail and quality to the campaign setting which had previously been unknown in the RPG industry, and could be considered a turning point away from the tactical roots of RPGs.

		EPT pioneered the critical hit, with a rule that a natural 20 to hit roll means double damage, or the attacker may try for an instant kill: he rolls d20 again, if he rolls a 19 or 20 on the second roll, the target is killed instantly.
		EPT's default adventure was “you're a bunch of barbarians from a distant land, who now have to learn about your new culture.” Professor Barker admitted this was a way to bring the uninitiated into the game: the player would learn as their character learned.
		EPT was often described as the Cadillac of RPGs, and this isn't far from the mark.

		Any references to the entirely distinct Empire of the Petal Throne game setting and its fictional world of Tekumel will be flagged as such to prevent confusion.
		The reason EPT still uses frames despite their deprecation is as a result of a design decision made a long time ago now.
		"Petal Throne" is something of a personal benchmark for depth and richness of detail in roleplaying for me. If I can make the world of Fading Suns half as rich, complex and exotic as Tekumel for my players then I consider my time well spent.
