 'Empire of the Sun'
What transpires in between, the sweeping story of Jim's wartime exploits after he is separated from his family, is set forth so spectacularly in Steven Spielberg's ''Empire of the Sun'' that the film seems to speak a language all its own.
There are sections of ''Empire of the Sun'' that are so visually expressive they barely require dialogue (although Tom Stoppard's screenplay, which streamlines J. Ballard's autobiographical novel, is often crisp and clever).
Once ''Empire of the Sun,'' which opens today at the National and other theaters, follows Jim to the prison camp where he spends the duration of the war, it becomes slightly less focused.

Empire of the Sun is based on JG Ballard's autobiographical bestseller, published to enormous acclaim in 1984.
Director Steven Spielberg simplifies the tale and removes many of the novel's teasing ambiguities but he successfully captures the central character's fascination with the madness of adulthood, the endless stream of strange and desperate people, and the sense of wonder elicited by the war's power and omnipresence.
Empire of the Sun was nominated for six Oscars and won three Baftas, including the award for best cinematography.

Empire Of The Sun in ZhurnalWiki
Ballard's largely-autobiographical Empire of the Sun tells of years spent by a young boy ("Jim", age ~10-15) in Shanghai, China, 1941-46—separated from parents, roving, lost, scrounging, then interned in a Japanese prison camp until the collapse of the occupying forces at the end of WWII.
He could see the smallest detail of everything around him: the flakes of rust on the railway lines, the sawteeth of the nettles beside the truck, the white soil bearing the imprint of its worn tires.
The sun fell toward the Shanghai hills, and the flooded paddy fields became a liquid chessboard of illuminated squares, a war table on which were placed crashed aircraft and abandoned tanks.

The moment truly prefigured the end of the British Empire in the East—and falsely suggested the arrival of a comparable successor, Japan's Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
But I feel some compensating irony, too, to think that, when both those empires were dead and gone, such old sorrows of Asia would eventually lead to the prosperity and even the happiness of nations.
