Quintessence (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quintessence is Borknagar's fourth studio album, and the final studio album by the band to feature ICS Vortex (Simen Hestnaes) on vocals.
According to interviews, this album was meant to be a strictly straight-forward fl metal album, as shown on the production quality and the fact that ICS Vortex's vocals are more of the traditional fl metal screams and growls, with less clean singing.

Borknagar - Satan Stole My Teddybear
The first album by the somewhat transitional "supergroup" (ha!) of Norway's Borknagar has recently been reissued in the States by Century Black, giving us a chance to see their original sound after already hearing where they've taken the thing up to this point.
The album on a whole contains much continuity and flows fairly well when you consider this is a side band for most of the members.
Having given this album many listens, I can honestly say it still suggests that this band is still hovering around a brilliant, timeless and classic release, but perhaps only if they can retain the same recording lineup for more than an album or two.

Then came Quintessence, a brilliant album that forged the aforementioned albums into one, as well as some new progressive touches, especially concerning the keyboards.
The melodies of this album circle you as if they were some sort of cosmic force of their own.
The only bad part about this album is that traditional fl metal lovers and hardcore thrashers will hate this album, since it is outside any set standard in any genre of music.

This is an album that continues both the sonic and conceptual evolutions that started eight years and six albums ago.
In fact, there isn't that much of a difference between this album and the band's last, in terms of sound; every Borknagar album has featured a marked shift from the previous one, but for the first time the shift is almost imperceptible.
With every other Borknagar album, a new group of people came together to interpret Øystein Brun's vision of "the yearning moods that entertain fantasy, and call revelations in our minds concerning the ancient past," as was set forth in the band's eponymous debut.

This album is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year and there are a lot of high expectations from fans as well as media.
I think I can safely say this is the lightest sounding album they have ever done but at the same time it is also their most well written as well.
There is a lot of piano on this album as well but again only in parts that the songs themselves call for it.

This indicates that they are a very professional and hard working group of people which stands even more clear after listening to one of their albums.
"Empiricism" is the first album featuring the new Swedish vocalist Vintersorg (Andreas Hedlund) who is previously well known to most metal fans for his wonderful work with Otyg, Havayoth and Vintersorg.
"Empiricism" is more complex and even than the last album and even though there are no real stand-out tracks like there was on "Quintessence" the two opening tracks are perhaps slightly better than the following eight ones.

 Utter Trash--Borknagar
Since their debut self titled album was released in 1995, Borknagar have been expanding the boundaries of heavy metal both musically and lyrically.
When I started to write the album, on the one hand I wanted to have it more brutal than before, and on the other hand to have it more slow and atmospheric and everything in between.
An album which is really relaxed with acoustic guitars and that kind of thing.

 Empiricism Music
Counting their self titled initial release on Malicious Records, "Empiricism" is the fifth offering from Borknagar, a band who has ascribed to the "if our name is completely unreadable on the cover people will know it's fl metal and buy it" philosphy.
Empiricism is part of the symphonic school of fl metal, which attempts to combine ear shredding death growls with fancy keyboard work, background ambience, and occasional clean vocals.
After 3 superb albums (The Olden Domain, The Archaic Course, Quintessence) you'd think that Borknagar would be ready with another outstanding performance.

Every time they release an album, it is met with much anticipation and comes highly regarded and critically acclaimed.
With "Empiricism", as with every release, Borknagar manage to capture more emotion and open more expanses than most other bands playing at ten times their proficiency.
One of the most talked about happenings since Borknagar's last album, "Quintessence" was the loss of vocalist Simen Hestnaes who left the group to devote more time to Dimmu Borgir, and his replacement by Vintersorg, from the band of the same name.

Norway's Borknagar have made it official that the title of their fifth full-length is Empiricism.

Empiricism will be recorded at Fagerborg/Top Room Studios with Børge Finnstad (Mayhem) in Oslo, Norway.

 The Metal Crypt - Reviews
Borknagar's latest offering is an interesting album in that it offers what I would call a unique use of vocals and keyboards - they are both overwhelming throughout the album, especially the keyboards.
The vocals on the second song, "The Presence Is Ominous" are the most notable on the album, as most of the singing is a "team effort" rather than just the lead vocalist, this practically sounds like an anthem.
The rest of the album goes along the same line as the beginning, with the exception of the very short instrumental song "Embers".

Probably the only people who will get all up in arms about the new Borknagar album will be the same ones who are still whining about Katatonia's huge stylistic switch between Brave Murder Day and Tonight's Decision.
Katatonia may have lost a handful of fans, but the new sound, while drastically different, still retained enough of the spirit and energy of the old sound to keep most fans entranced.
Some of the credit (or blame) can be attributed to the addition of a new singer (from Vintersorg), a new keyboard player (courtesy of fl metal freaks Solefald) and what seems to be a new found melodicism in their songwriting.

The band's latest album 'Empiricism' is truly a creative effort combining feverish orchestration, varied instrumentation, intelligent lyrics and epic melodies that set Borknagar's music apart from current fl / death trends in the metal scene.
I think there are still some elements of it, when it comes to the singing, and the fact that we use some blastbeats, or similar stuff like that, but not really fl metal.
The thought has been that it's just all the albums in one box, I guess, but there might be some additional stuff that's going to come out.

Empiricism starts off with "The Genuine Pulse", a song which most web sites and reviews toute as the best on the album.
The album rocks right through to the last cut, which is kind of mellow.

It's a brave move to title an album like so with all the connotations that word has in the realms of metal.
Still, this album is a good melodic slab of Nordic metal and I would prefer this to many of the noise-mongering Mayhem clones out there.
The only flaw this album appears to have is the negative attention it gets by nitwits who will automatically bash it because they can't wrap their minds around it.

Unlike the somewhat experimental and disjointed Quintessence disc that preceded it, Empiricism is a lot easier to appreciate from the first listen onward.
Regardless of who is responsible, Empiricism is a monster.
The production is much better this time out and memorable moments abound, such as the controlled chaos of "Liberated" and the Mercyful Fate-like intro riff to "Gods of My World." Complexities do pop up, such as the overall influx of piano and lush, acoustic-laced moments (most evident on epic disc-closer "The View of Everlast").

Hedlund has such a distinctive voice that the album basically sounded like a Borknagar album with “the guy from Vintersorg singing”-it didn’t have the identity of Borknagar's prior efforts.
The album is still generally a forward thinking, progressive fl metal output, but seems genuinely artistic and soulfully rendered rather then pretentious, pompous and overly played and written.
The dramatic orchestral flourish that opens the aptly named “Quintessence” introduces Hedlund’s most captivating and expansive performance of the album that openly shows why he now is undoubtedly one of the best vocalists in metal.
