Empress Gemmei (or Gemmyo 元明天皇) (661–722) was the 43rd imperial ruler of Japan and the fourth woman to hold such a position.
She was a daughter of Emperor Tenji of Japan and the wife of Kusakabe no miko, who was the son of Emperor Temmu of Japan and Empress Jito of Japan.
In 708 she moved the capital city of Japan from Fujiwara to Heijo-Kyo, west of the modern city of Nara, thus giving the Nara period of Japanese history its name.

Empress Meishō (明正天皇 Meishō Tennō) (January 9, 1624 - December 4, 1696) was the 109th imperial ruler of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession, reigning from December 22, 1629 to November 14, 1643.
Her name was derived by combining the names of two previous empresses, Empress Gemmei (707-715) and her daughter Empress Genshō (715-724).
By her enthronement, she became the first woman to occupy the throne since Empress Shōtoku, who died in 770.
