EMS aircraft dispatch is appropriate if the time saved by such response or transport has a reasonable probability in making a positive difference in saving life or limb.
If an EMS aircraft is unable to land at the scene or the Incident Commander deems it appropriate, an alternate landing zone may be selected.

The Sheridan ambulance is dispatched by the Sheriff department on the county fire frequency.

Is EMS dispatching (and consequent unit response) done with regard to sound medical evaluation, or the desire to "cover the department's tail"?
Perhaps it is time for fire service EMS managers to include physician medical control, so important in patient care, as an integral part of the definition of EMS dispatch protocols.
If EMS is going to continue to be dynamic and responsive to the citizens it serves, continued reassessment is necessary and may require the use of innovative, and possibly radical, approaches to EMS dispatch and response.

Ambulance dispatching across Madera County was switched Wednesday nearly 100 miles south from Mariposa to Fresno County's Emergency Medical Services center.
A few minutes later, two ambulances from Madera County and one from Fresno were dispatched to a multiple-injury traffic accident at Avenue 7 and Road 32.
In Fresno, EMS Director Daniel Lynch said Wednesday that his center dispatches the closest ambulances "regardless of boundaries." The Fresno center will instantly notify Mariposa dispatchers about Madera County emergency medical calls that require fire engine response.
